The Philadelphia Eagles have no issue drafting players from the University of Georgia, especially on the defensive side of the ball. …

To say the least.

In their last four drafts, Philadelphia has taken at least one player from Georgia three times. The latest came with off-ball linebacker Smael Mondon on the final day of the 2025 Draft.

Mondon was on both of Georgia's National Championship teams in 2021 and 2022. He played with Eagle stars like Jalen Carter, Nakobe Dean, and Nolan Smith.

It's his prior relationship with Dean that helped him reach his full potential over the last couple of years, and he remains excited about joining the Eagles to begin his career at this point.

“Even when I got drafted, Nakobe was the first person I called,” Mondon told reporters at the start of Eagles rookie camp on Friday. “So talking to Nakobe, talking to Nolan [Smith], talking to JC [Jalen Carter], talking to all of them, they’re just telling me how everything is.

“They make me feel comfortable.”

It's quite ironic that Dean, a linebacker heading into the final year of his rookie deal with the Eagles, may very well be training his replacement of sorts with Mondon. But that goes to the leadership he has always shown.

“Nakobe’s like my big brother. I came into Georgia as a freshman, and to see Nakobe win the Butkus, I’ve been looking up to him for many years now," Mondon said. "So to get here and have him still lead me, it’s been good, it’s been a blessing.”

Dean may be entering the final year with the Eagles, but it is clear that he remains as key to the team's success than ever. Especially with so many Bulldogs still on the roster.
