Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani's Next Pitching Outing Announced originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani will be on the mound this Sunday, June 22, when the Dodgers square off against the Washington Nationals in Los Angeles.

Ohtani returned to the mound for the first time in 663 days on Monday. It was his first pitching appearance since joining the Dodgers after signing a record $700 million contract prior to the 2024 season. The three-time MVP struggled with control in his first pitching action since his Tommy John surgery, needing 28 pitches to get out of the lone inning he was on the mound. He did not struggle with velocity, however, hitting 100 mph.

"Not quite happy with the results overall," Ohtani said via an interpreter, "but I think the biggest takeaway for me is that I feel good enough to be able to go out for my next outing."

Sunday's appearance will mark the second stint on what could be considered the MLB's most unique rehab assignment. Under normal circumstances, pitchers returning from extended injuries spend time in the minors tuning up before returning to the major league mound.

However, Ohtani is too valuable a commodity to spend any time away from the Dodgers. While recovering from surgery last season, he was the club's Designated Hitter, and proceeded to have one of the most memorable seasons in baseball history. In addition to becoming the MLB's first 50/50 player (50 home runs and 50 steals in a single season), Ohtani hit for an average of 0.310 and an OPS of 1.036 while leading the Dodgers to their first full-season World Series win since 1988 (the team also won in the COVID-abbreviated 2020 season).

It is likely that Ohtani will continue these short appearances as he continues his return to form.
