When the St. Louis Cardinals entered the 2025 season, most fans were expecting the team to be near the bottom of the standings and nowhere near the playoff race. The Cardinals' first homestand proved that, with attendance numbers being some of the lowest in the history of Busch Stadium III.

However, the team has exceeded early expectations and has been on a hot streak to start the campaign. Entering May 20th, St. Louis holds a record of 27-21 and is second in the NL Central, trailing only the Chicago Cubs in the divisional race.

The team has also won 13 of its last 15, so it's safe to say that St. Louis has a big decision to make about what their plans are for the rest of the season. MLB Network analyst and Team USA Manager Mark DeRosa believes that the hot start should convince the Cardinals to buy in and push for the postseason in 2025.

"The calculus has changed for the Cardinals, winning 13 of 15," DeRosa said on his show MLB Central on Tuesday morning. "They might need to redirect and add and push forward."

DeRosa mentioned Brendan Donovan's sixth in the league .337 batting average, Masyn Winn's defensive praus and Victor Scott II's blazing speed as reasons for the young Cards success this season. He also said Nolan Arenado has taken Lars Nootbaar "under his wing" this season and it's leading to Nootbaar's success. Nootbaar's seven home runs ranks top on the Cardinals team this season and his Baseball Savant page has him in the upper echelon of the leagues hitters by profile.

DeRosa also mentioned St. Louis first baseman Willson Contreras as the "Theory of Chaos".

"Willson Contreras creates chaos for this team," DeRosa said. "Right in the middle of the order, giving this team edge, fire [and] the ability to drive in runs."

DeRosa also shouted out the Cardinals pitching rotation in 2025. In their last 20 games, the group is 10-3 with a 2.83 ERA and the help is coming from all angles. Miles Mikolas has lowered his season ERA to 3.77 with three good starts this month and Matthew Liberatore is shaping up to be one of the best young starters in the major leagues.

And it doesn't get any easier when St. Louis goes to the bullpen. DeRosa called Cards closer Ryan Helsley the "Law of Thermodynamics" for his blazing fastball that's averaging 99 MPH and 2.84 ERA.

With a key couple of weeks coming it, it will be interesting to see how the Cardinals and manager Oliver Marmol attack the meat of the season. As we inch closer to the trade deadline, St. Louis will have a decision to make regarding their intended path for the rest of the campaign.
