24 million dollars guaranteed??

That’s a 20 percent increase over the amount Eli Manning got just one year ago.

Is that typical? 20 percent more than the previous year’s #1 contract.

If only my salary went up 20 fricking percent a year..shhhesh.

only guaranteed 4mil per year. it's a 6 year contract. looking between the numbers, it's a solid contract. 57 is a huge number, but there's no WAY he's going to get that. i'm sure there are performance guarantees like extra million for breaking rookie records, etc. anyone have details on the contract yet?

Depends on the layout of the deal. I highly doubt he got a 24 mill signing bonus. Half of that is probably signing bonus while the other half is spread out into roster bonuses or something else. The word "guaranteed" is very subjective now a days. Gauranteed doesnt really mean gauranteed now a days, its just a flashy word thrown around way to often.

If you could really break down the structure of the deal I would be willing to bet that he got the usual 5-10% increase.

20% increase? That's nothing. Last year they only screwed the Cardinals (twice), and this year they're screwing every team in the league? Now THAT'S and increase.

They better get the comp strategy under controll or the league will end up with a stoppage down the road. A 5 - 10% increase is insane. Tickets, parking, consessions & apparal are not increasing at that rate. You will continue to see good vets pushed out and younger guys wanting to rework their deals half way through a contract because the team can cut them anytime they want.

SF is going to be a celler dweller. I doubt he's going be all that big a preformer for a while. Paying out big bucks is going to chip away from other areas that need to be addressed down the road. Manning was over paid and so is Smith - just not warranted for an unproven pro QB. Guys like Rothlesberger are a rare commodity for the first year! JMO.

The new CBA is rumored to be completed before the season ends, maybe even sooner.

Word is that there will be some sort of rookie slotting system in place. Maybe not a full on one like the NBA, but the idea is still the same. As for the 5-10% increase tickets/ect. dont go up by that much but the TV contracts and other things do. For example the salary cap is based on revenue from the past year and this year it went up over 5%, so the league as a whole did make a 5%+ increase in revenue.

This has the ring of truth.

Both the owners and NFLPA want to get some kind of control over rokkie contracts

He could Ryan Leaf it for the next year or two, and still walk with 24 mil+

Thats just fooking insanity.

That is not true. Guaranteed does not mean guaranteed in todays nfl contracts. It is a mirage and looks nice an paper. The only true gauranteed money is signing bonuses. But the media lumps them up with Roster bonuses and other bonuses, of which both are only gauranteed if they meet a certian goal first.

The whole 24 mill was not a signing bonus.

the NFL will SOON enact a rookie set guideline for salaries. meaning every person drafted will already have a contract in place they can not negotiate...meaning no more rookie hold outs or missing mini camps.

Garaunteed in 4 years with a 10 million roster bonus means he'll get cut or his contract renegotiated. It is a word too easily thrown around.

I don't think this signing will have a huge impact on the rest of the rookies, these top 10-15 picks are all guys who look to really care about playing football and want to get on the field; hopefully there are no S. Taylors or Winslows in this group.

I hate contracts that will never be realized. Remeber Favre's and Moss' "100 Million dollar" contracts? What a joke. Sometimes you think these guys get a kick out of having the largest total number on the contract that they will never see, just so they can go "neener neener neener, my contrcat is bigger than yours."

Didn't somebody post that the CBA is close to being agreed upon? Rookie contracts have created a problem with bad teams who draft poorly staying bad. You tie up a lot of money to a kid that sucks, and it hurts your team's ability to field a winner.

In the same breath, the NFL has a problem with decent vets being out of work because rookies are cheaper. Rememebr when they began to allow vets to sign for 750K and only count 450 on the cap. Older vets were being replaced by cheap labor. So slotted pay could cause a whole new trend that affects the players.

I believe the new NFL TV contract signed in April were a 53% increase in value. Not sure how exactly they are phasing in the money (it's not straight line) but it's still a huge increase.

Add to that, the NFLPA will surely ask for more revenue sources to be included into the salary cap formula, so expect big increases in the cap and cooresponding player salaries.

Wait 2 years and Alex's contract will seem small.
