I apologize if this was common knowledge but I wasn’t aware of the guarantees that locked in this past March. Apparently the 2026 base salary, a portion of the roster bonus, the workout bonus and perhaps more became guaranteed. As a result cutting Murray even after June 1 next year would result in a $47 mil dead money cap hit. Trading him would be less of a hit, but the receiving team would face a $22 mil in base salary. I presume the Cards would only move him after a bad year. So who’s going to pay that for a failed QB. Then there’s the issue that Murray has struggled to end seasons and this year it seems as though the schedule is setup to make the end very challenging. It may be the Cards will hold onto Murray in 2026, even if he struggles in 2025. Either way I expect the Cards to focus on offense in the next draft unless some unusual opportunities present themselves.

Rolling guarantees make it impossible to cut Murray, but fairly easy to trade him.

A team that trades for him in 2026 would get him for 2 years, a little over $42 million fully guaranteed with a team option on the third year. Thats Sam Darnold money. It’s practically Justin Fields’ deal.

Saints, Steelers, maybe Dolphins if they move on from Tua, Browns, would perhaps take that risk for a second-round pick even if Kyler is is usual 3700-yard self.
