Coco Gauff found herself in a star-studded quarterfinal matchup in the 2025 U.S. Open on Sept. 1, as the No. 3 seed in the women's singles draw, took on fellow former U.S. Open champ Naomi Osaka.
The South Florida native struggled in the first set as Osaka, the four-time major champion, successfully broke Gauff in two separate games to take the first set, 6-3. Gauff had 14 unforced errors in the first set often unable to control her forehand. The players remained on serve though Gauff still seemed unable to clean up the errors. She had another 14 unforced errors in the early stages of the second set, leading to Osaka breaking Gauff with a 3-2 lead.
The No. 3 player in the world from Delray Beach has been struggling with her serve since she won the French Open in June, leading to her changing coaches less than a week before the U.S. Open began. Her issues continued into the season's last Grand Slam event, though, leading to her crying into a towel on the bench during her second-round win.

No, and it wasn't particularly close. Coco Gauff woes since her French Open victory continued, losing to 23rd-seeded Naomi Osaka in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The match took only 1 hour, 4 minutes in which Gauff had 33 unforced errors and just eight winners. After a hug with Osaka after the match, Gauff quickly exited the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
It's not clear when Gauff's next match will be as the U.S. Open closes out the 2025 major championship season.
