Vicente Padilla has pitched badly this year. He was hurt a lot of last year and is either still hurt or can't get his mechanics back. His heavy moving sinker isn't sinking much.

Randy Wolf also was hurt last year. He pitched badly in April but has rebounded to a nice 3.20 ERA in May. He has always pitched the D-Backs well.

Brett Myers has been awesome. A young pitcher finally coming into his own. Corey Lidle is steady.

My hopes is to get into the D-Backs bullpen. Fortunately the Phillies lead the NL in OBP and I believe pitches seen per at bat. They are very patient, which should help in getting to the pen.

It seems that the weather in "Philly" will be the major factor in this series.. It appears that there is a significant chance of rain over the next 4 days except for Sunday....

Saturday:
Showers early becoming less numerous later in the day. High 73F. Winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50%.

Saturday night:
A few clouds. Low 62F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph.

Sunday:
Times of sun and clouds. Highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s.

Monday:
A few thunderstorms possible. Highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid 60s.

Friday's game was postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a twin bill Saturday starting at 2:05 p.m. MT.

That according to the Dbacks official site, however, with the forecast for tomorrow there is still a high possibility that both those games could be indeed postponed as well....

Isn't this the first time the Dbacks have been rained-out all year thus far?

This is perfect, a double header to watch while I chaperone my daughter's 14th birthday pool party. May be some of her young suitors will even want to "rap" about baseball as well.

We're only 2 out man! We need this series bad! What kills me is how we're in the hunt, yet still in last place. How that happened after our play last month is beyond me, but I'll take it! Kenny Lofton coming back has been huge IMO. :newcards:

Well.. as the legendary Cub HOFers Ernie Banks would say...."Let's Play 2!"

Unfortunately, Game 1 of the double header isnt being televised, so I'll do my best to keep everyone up-to-date....

Game 1 Starting Line-Ups:

Dbacks (30-24)
C. Counsell 2b
R. Clayton ss
L. Gonzalez lf
T. Glaus 3b
T. Clark 1b
S. Green rf
L. Terrero cf
C. Snyder c
J. Vazquez p

vs.

Phillies: (27-27)
J. Rollins ss
K. Lofton cf
B. Abreu rf
J. Thome 1b
P. Burrell lf
C. Utley 2b
D. Bell 3b
M. Lieberthal c
V. Padilla p

Line Score:
0 1 0 0 0 0 0 5 0 6- 9-0
0 0 2 6 0 0 2 0 - 10-14-0

Top of 1st:
- C. Counsell doubled to deep right center
- R. Clayton sacrificed to first, C. Counsell to third
- L. Gonzalez struck out looking
- T. Glaus grounded out to third

What is with Gonzo and his horrid performance with RISP and less than 2-outs? That has plagued him and the rest of the G-Force for most of the season.......

Guess what?
Lofton triples with 1 out for the Phillies, however, Vazquez manages to escape without any damage done by K'ing Abreu and Thome:

Bottom of 1st:
- J. Rollins popped out to shallow center
- K. Lofton tripled to deep right center
- B. Abreu struck out swinging
- J. Thome struck out swinging
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 1 Hit, 0 Errors)

Tony "The Tiger" Clark leads-off the 2nd for the Dbacks with a HR to deep center

Top of 2nd:
- T. Clark homered to deep center
- S. Green flied out to deep right center
- L. Terrero struck out swinging
- C. Snyder lined out to left
- End of Inning (1 Run, 1 Hit, 0 Errors)

Wow.. the Phillies still aren't fairing well with RISP and less than 2-outs (obviously that is perfect for us..well not for the "Phans")

Bottom of 2nd:
- P. Burrell grounded out to shortstop
- C. Utley tripled to deep right
- D. Bell fouled out to catcher
- M. Lieberthal fouled out to catcher
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 1 Hit, 0 Errors)

Uneventful top half of the 3rd for the Dbacks:
- J. Vazquez grounded out to shortstop
- C. Counsell flied out to right
- R. Clayton grounded out to second
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)

Well.. Vazquez appeared to be cruising along to start the 3rd inning, however, pesky Kenny Lofton hits a bunt single to 3B and is promptly driven in on Abreu's 2-run shot to RF...

- V. Padilla grounded out to third
- J. Rollins flied out to right
- K. Lofton reached on bunt single to third
- B. Abreu homered to deep right, K. Lofton scored
- J. Thome flied out to center
- End of Inning (2 Runs, 2 Hits, 0 Errors)

2-1 Phillies

Rally time to start the Dbacks 4th:

Gonzo walks (always is effective without runners on base), Glaus Ks, however, "The Tiger" hits a single...

Green fouls to the catcher... lord... why oh why do the G-Force become stagnant with RISP and less than 2-outs? Please someone willing to enlighten me......

I guess I was too premature to bust-out my Rally Cap, eh?

- L. Gonzalez walked
- T. Glaus struck out swinging
- T. Clark singled to right, L. Gonzalez to second
- S. Green fouled out to catcher
- L. Terrero struck out swinging

Phillies now are mounting a rally of their own:
Burrell leads off their 4th with a single and advances over to 3rd on Utley's double

2nd & 3rd 0-outs

Make that bases loaded and 0-outs on Dave Bell's IF single to SS...

Oh lord... 4-1 on Mike Lieberthal's 2 run single

1st & 2nd ... still 0-out.....

Padilla helps out his cause by executing a sac-bunt advancing their runners to 2nd & 3rd, but thankfully 1 batter has been finally retired....

Rollins hits a grounder to 2nd without knocking the runners in...

Still 2nd & 3rd... 2-outs

Lord... can someone douse Kenny Lofton or what?

Lofton drives in both Bell & Lieberthal with a 2-run single...

6-1 Phillies....

You've got to be kidding me? What's Melvin doing leaving Vazquez in?

Abreu touches them all on his 2nd HR of the game... A 2-run HR....

8-1 Phillies.....

Lord.. have mercy:

Viewer discretion is advised on the Phillies 4th inning recap is rated XXX for extreme graphic.... you could fill in the word on that:

- P. Burrell singled to left
- C. Utley doubled to deep right, P. Burrell to third
- D. Bell singled to shortstop
- M. Lieberthal singled to left, P. Burrell and C. Utley scored, D. Bell to second
- V. Padilla sacrificed to pitcher, D. Bell to third, M. Lieberthal to second
- J. Rollins grounded out to second
- K. Lofton singled to deep right center, D. Bell and M. Lieberthal scored
- B. Abreu homered to deep right center, K. Lofton scored
- J. Thome grounded out to first
- End of Inning (6 Runs, 6 Hits, 0 Errors)

Well.. only positive development of the Dbacks 5th is that Vazquez was finally lifted from the game:

- C. Snyder fouled out to right
- Q. McCracken hit for J. Vazquez
- Q. McCracken grounded out to second
- C. Counsell grounded out to first
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)

Matt Herges now is in making his Dbacks debut

Anyone happen to know who was cleared from the Dbacks roster to make room for Herges and Vargas?

Pitching line on Vazquez:
4-IN, 10-H, 8-R, 8-ER, 0-BB, 2-Ks, 2-HRs 78 pitches (54 strikes)

Herges pitched out of a Phillies jam in their 5th with some relative ease:

- M. Herges relieved J. Vazquez
- P. Burrell singled to left
- C. Utley fouled out to third
- D. Bell flied out to right
- M. Lieberthal walked, P. Burrell to second
- J. Michaels hit for V. Padilla
- J. Michaels flied out to deep center
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 1 Hit, 0 Errors)

No runs across for the Dbacks in their 6th:

R. Tejeda in for Padilla

- R. Tejeda relieved V. Padilla
- R. Clayton struck out swinging
- L. Gonzalez popped out to shallow left
- T. Glaus walked
- T. Clark popped out to shallow left
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)

"I've got to concentrate, concentrate, concentrate. I've got to concentrate, concentrate, concentrate. Hello, hello, hello. Echo, echo, echo. Pinch hitting for Pedro Borbau... Manny Mota, Mota, Mota."

Herges beginning to settle in now:

- J. Rollins grounded out to second
- K. Lofton grounded out to pitcher
- B. Abreu struck out looking
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)

Down by 7 in the 7th inning and a base-runner gets caught stealing? Botch hit-and-run attempt?

- S. Green flied out to deep right
- L. Terrero walked
- L. Terrero caught stealing, pitcher to second
- C. Snyder struck out looking
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)

Now we rise in the land of "Brothetly Love" for the 7th inning stretch....

Papa Grande now in for the Dbacks... Not that bad of a debut by Herges.. will have his pitching-line soon......

Thome homers for Phillies (he's on my Fantasy Baseball team, however, of course I'd rather have him go 0-fer this weekend)....

9-1 Phillies

We definitely need the mercy rule now....

Lieberthal drives Utley in on a single to left and advances to 2nd on the throw....

10-1 Phillies

- J. Valverde relieved M. Herges
- J. Thome homered to deep right
- P. Burrell popped out to center
- C. Utley singled to right
- D. Bell popped out to shortstop
- M. Lieberthal singled to deep left, C. Utley scored, M. Lieberthal to second advancing on throw
- R. Tejeda grounded out to pitcher
- End of Inning (2 Runs, 3 Hits, 0 Errors)

Listening to the radio and they said Terrero broke for second long before the pitcher released the ball.

Okay...thanks....but.. lord..lack of execution of the proper fundamentals... At least it wasnt pathetic strategy employed by Melvin that cost them......

Comeback time in the 8th?

Counsell just nailed a 2 run HR

10-3 Phillies

Mark this date down... One of the G-Force actually managed to produce with RISP and less than 2-outs.....

Glaus drives Clayton home safely on a run scoring single

10-4 Phillies

Bases Loaded & 0-outs for the Dbacks....

G3 (Green) though still is comatosed with RISP and lofts a shallow fly ball to LF and doesnt manage to drive in a run......

Terrero lifts Green and the rest of the Dbacks by knocking in Gonzo and Glaus...

10-6 Phillies

Bases Loaded...1-out... Game Tying at the plate:

Cruz Jr. PH for Tracy hits into an inning ending DP

Lord.... wonder why Melvin inserted the struggling Cruz into that situation when Tracy usually thrives in those clutch situations....

- E. Chavez in right field
- T. Perez at first
- C. Tracy hit for J. Valverde
- C. Tracy hit by pitch
- C. Counsell homered to deep right, C. Tracy scored
- R. Clayton walked
- A. Fultz relieved R. Tejeda
- L. Gonzalez singled to center, R. Clayton to third
- T. Glaus singled to left, R. Clayton scored, L. Gonzalez to second
- T. Clark singled to center, L. Gonzalez to third, T. Glaus to second
- S. Green flied out to left
- R. Cormier relieved A. Fultz
- L. Terrero singled to left, L. Gonzalez and T. Glaus scored, T. Clark to second
- C. Snyder walked, T. Clark to third, L. Terrero to second
- J. Cruz Jr. hit for C. Tracy
- J. Cruz Jr. grounded into double play third to second to first, C. Snyder out at second
- End of Inning (5 Runs, 5 Hits, 0 Errors)

Lopez in for Valverde gets the job done by retiring the Phillies in order in their half of the 8th:

- J. Lopez relieved J. Valverde
- J. Rollins grounded out to shortstop
- K. Lofton grounded out to pitcher
- E. Chavez grounded out to second

Was very crucial for him to stave-off the Phillies that inning after the Dbacks scored 5-runs...at least it keeps them within striking distance to completely overcome an earlier 9-run deficit....

Please join the chat room for a Game #2 chat...everyone is invited...

http://www.arizonasportsfans.com/chat.php

Game #2 Starting Line-Ups:

Diamondbacks (30-25):

C. Counsell 2b
A. Cintron ss
L. Gonzalez lf
T. Glaus 3b
S. Green rf
J. Cruz Jr. cf
C. Tracy 1b
K. Stinnett c
R. Ortiz p

vs.

Phillies (28-27):
K. Lofton cf
P. Polanco 3b
B. Abreu rf
J. Thome 1b
C. Utley 2b
J. Michaels lf
T. Perez ss
T. Pratt c
B. Myers p

Line Score:
1 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 0 3 10 0
1 0 0 0 0 3 0 1 -5 5 0

Will just contain all the scoring summaries (at least from my end) to just a couple of posts this time, but everyone please feel free to add as you so wish/desire.....

No mere words can explain this:

Top of 1st:
- C. Counsell singled to left
- A. Cintron singled to center, C. Counsell to second
- L. Gonzalez singled to center, C. Counsell scored, A. Cintron to second
- T. Glaus struck out looking
- A. Cintron to third, L. Gonzalez to second on wild pitch
- S. Green walked
- J. Cruz Jr. struck out swinging
- C. Tracy struck out looking
- End of Inning (1 Run, 3 Hits, 0 Errors)

Just how inept are the Dbacks with RISP and less than 2-outs? Some thing has to been soon or else......

Phillies 1st:
- K. Lofton walked
- P. Polanco singled to center, K. Lofton to second
- B. Abreu grounded into fielder's choice, K. Lofton to third, P. Polanco out at second
- J. Thome grounded out to second, K. Lofton scored, B. Abreu to second
- C. Utley grounded out to third
- End of Inning (1 Run, 1 Hit, 0 Errors)

Ortiz exhibiting his lack of control yet again...threw as always too many pitches.. hope he can last until at least the 6th...

Top of 2nd:
- K. Stinnett singled to left

- R. Ortiz sacrificed to catcher, K. Stinnett to second
- C. Counsell hit by pitch
- A. Cintron lined into double play left to second, K. Stinnett out at second

Lord, what a play by Phillies LF Michaels to rob Cintron of what could have been potentially a 2-run scoring play....unfortunately, it resulted in an ending inning DP instead.....

Bottom of 2nd:
- J. Michaels popped out to center
- T. Perez flied out to center
- T. Pratt grounded out to third
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)

Ortiz... 1-2-3 inning? ..Again.. must mark this date down....

Top of 3rd:
- L. Gonzalez struck out swinging
- T. Glaus grounded out to third
- S. Green grounded out to first

Bottom of 3rd:
- B. Myers grounded out to first
- K. Lofton lined out to third
- P. Polanco grounded out to shortstop
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)

Ortiz has found his groove... has retired 9 consecutive batters to this point..

Top 4th:
- J. Cruz Jr. lined out to second
- C. Tracy doubled to left
- K. Stinnett struck out looking
- R. Ortiz grounded out to third

Bottom 4th:
- B. Abreu grounded out to pitcher
- J. Thome struck out looking
- C. Utley flied out to right

Ortiz has now retired 12 batters in a row.... now..I hope the offense can live-up to its end of the bargain.....

Top 5th:

- C. Counsell grounded out to second
- A. Cintron homered to deep right
- L. Gonzalez homered to deep right
- T. Glaus struck out swinging
- S. Green grounded out to pitcher

Back-2-back bombs by Cintron/Gonzo....

And as probably many watched on their own television screens/computer monitors (if you watch MLB.com baseball for those out-of-town fans) that Cintron HR was certainly a BOOMER...I mean.. BOOM TIME....

Bottom 5th:
- J. Michaels lined out to right
- T. Perez grounded out to second
- T. Pratt grounded out to shortstop

15 in row retired by Ortiz... keep it up... and also please add even more insurance runs....

Top 6th:
- J. Cruz Jr. walked
- C. Tracy singled to left, J. Cruz Jr. to second
- K. Stinnett grounded out to pitcher, J. Cruz Jr. to third, C. Tracy to second
- R. Ortiz grounded out to pitcher
- C. Counsell grounded out to second

Bottom 6th:
All good things must come to an end as they say... Ortiz has yet again is reverting back to his Elmer Dessens impersonations.... Solid until the 6th inning when he issued a Kenny Lofton run scoring triple followed with a 2-run HR by Polanco....

- E. Chavez hit for B. Myers
- E. Chavez singled to right
- K. Lofton tripled to deep center, E. Chavez scored
- P. Polanco homered to deep left, K. Lofton scored

- B. Abreu grounded out to first

- J. Michaels lined out to center

- E. Chavez in left field
- A. Cintron struck out swinging
- L. Gonzalez singled to left
- T. Glaus struck out looking
- S. Green struck out swinging

7th inning stretch in Philly.....

Bottom 7th:
- T. Perez struck out swinging
- T. Pratt fouled out to first
- E. Chavez flied out to deep center

Top 8th:
- J. Cruz Jr. grounded out to second
- C. Tracy flied out to right center
- Q. McCracken hit for K. Stinnett
- Q. McCracken struck out looking

Bottom 8th:
Phillies added an insurance run a solo-shot off the bat Polanco....

- C. Snyder catching
- J. Lopez relieved R. Ortiz
- K. Lofton struck out swinging
- P. Polanco homered to deep left center
- B. Abreu walked
- J. Thome struck out swinging
- C. Utley grounded out to shortstop

The Dbacks must overcome this run deficit, but have a difficult task as Bill Wagner is brought in to close the game out for the Phillies...

Top 9th:
I'm....I just can't really express myself without using any expletives....
What went on there? Ahhhhhhh... Absolutely nothing ceases to amaze me.. A match-up you so desired...The GW run AB and lord... a botched hit-and-run... a late jump by Gonzo... lord....

B. Wagner relieved R. Madson
- T. Clark hit for J. Lopez

Well.. I guess the Dbacks deserved being swept.... Inept hitting with RISP and some rather inexcusable play-calling at unopportune times... Just not properly executing the fundamentals whatsoever.. Also, the BP was shoddy today in not keeping the games as close as they could have been.... Just an horrid all-around display by the Dbacks... Let's hope that they manage to put an immediate hault to their 4 game losing streak with a much needed victory tomorrow and a series equailizer on Monday......

Geez. I can't believe Gonzo ended the game by having such a senior moment.

Phillies are very hot right now, and we are definitely looking like the .500 team many of us anticipated.

An interesting statistic is that the D-Backs have scored 242 runs and allowed 278. That's allowing 36 more runs than they have scored. Only Kansas City, Cincinnati and Colorado have allowed more runs scored.

With that big a difference between runs scored and runs allowed, the expected record would be 24-32. The D-Backs have thus played with a lot of luck thus far.

Regression to the mean and all that.

It has more to do with 6 or 8 total blowouts - like the huge run differential in the first Cubs game. We've had a number of one-run wins and 8-10 run losses.

It wasn't a home run but it doesn't really matter.

This team is really struggling. They've lost 4 straight series and don't seem to be going anywhere.

What's really frustrating is the way they're losing. The score runs they can't make outs. The make outs they can't score runs? They're making stupid plays?
