Jacob Markstrom made 41 saves on 44 shots as the New Jersey Devils suffered a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Lenovo Center on Sunday.
"We have to work harder, create your own lanes to the net," Timo Meier said. "They are strong and they battle hard, they compete, all things we know. Like I said, we have a game plan. We got to execute it better."
Carolina's fourth line scored the game's opening goal 2:24 into the first period. Jalen Chatfield's snap shot from the top of the right circle beat Markstrom. Chatfield's linemate, William Carrier, provided a screen as he battled with Devils' defenseman Brian Dumoulin.
New Jersey's goaltender had an excellent first period, stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced. Half of those shots came while the Devils were shorthanded.
"We expected a push from them coming out hot here," Nico Hischier said. "We didn't hold against it. We didn't start too bad, but that one goal hurt us a bit. After that, we had a power play, and that, I think, changed the momentum. Didn't get much going, and that definitely has to be better. But we lost one game, and we come back now."
Logan Stankoven's first goal of the afternoon extended the Hurricanes' lead to 2-0 at 6:37 of the second period. He potted his second in the final seconds of a Hurricanes' power play seven minutes later.
The Devils broke through in the final minutes of the second period. While playing four-on-four, Brett Pesce broke the puck out to Jesper Bratt. The Swede found Nico Hischier racing into Carolina's zone and passed it to his captain. His snap shot beat Frederik Andersen for a 3-1 score.
Andrei Svechnikov scored an empty net goal at 17:32 of the third period to secure a Game 1 Hurricanes victory. Ex-Devil Taylor Hall picked up two assists.
"We had a lot of guys who I thought really looked uncomfortable out there and took some time to really find themselves," Keefe told reporters. "Some got better, and some didn't. Obviously, we are going to need a whole lot more in Game 2."
The Devils and Hurricanes will face off at the Lenovo Center in North Carolina on Tuesday night.
