For the ninth straight season, the Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs and thus find themselves in the NHL draft lottery for 2025.
The club enters Year 7 under general manager Steve Yzerman, with the pressure building to at least break the franchise-record playoff drought.
The Wings, famously, have not had much luck in the lottery, and this year, they can't even win the No. 1 pick. But they have a chance to jump 10 spots to No. 2. The highest selection under Yzerman has been at No. 4 overall in 2020, when Lucas Raymond was the pick.
Last season, the Wings picked right-winger Michael Brandsegg-Nygard at No. 15 overall.
Here's what to know about the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, where the NHL will select the order for the June 27-28 draft from the 16 non-playoff franchises based on a weighted system.
When: 7 p.m. Monday, May 5 at the NHL Network studio in Secaucus, New Jersey.
TV channel: ESPN.
The rules: The NHL will select the top two teams in June’s draft from the 16 non-playoff franchises based on a weighted system.
The top pick: The San Jose Sharks again have the best odds to receive the No. 1 pick at 25.5%, with the Chicago Blackhawks again at No. 2 with 13.5%. The Nashville Predators (11.5%), Philadelphia Flyers (9.5%) and Boston Bruins (8.5%) round out the top five. Last year, the league-worst Sharks won the lottery and the Blackhawks retained the No. 2 pick.
Wings’ odds: The Red Wings enter the lottery at No. 12, with a 5.1% chance of moving up their maximum 10 spots to No. 2. They have an 85.7% chance of staying put and an 8.9% chance of moving back one spot.
MAILBAG: Why Canadiens rose from the bottom while Red Wings dragged
The buzz: According to the NHL, this is the first time in the 30-year-history of the draft lottery that the drawing will be shown live in-studio. Normally, a countdown from 16 to 1 is shown on TV after the lottery balls have been drawn minutes earlier behind the scenes, as the NBA does.
For a full breakdown, here are the rules.
Nos. 12-16 cannot win the No. 1 pick.
*Rangers will transfer their first-round pick in either the 2025 or 2026 draft to the Canucks, at the Rangers’ discretion.
**If the Flames first-round pick becomes a top-10 selection, they will transfer the Panthers first-rounder to the Canadiens. If the Flames first-round pick is not a top-10 pick following the lottery, they will transfer the pick to the Canadiens.
OPINION: Wings GM Steve Yzerman will begin season on hot seat, whether he knows it or not
Only teams that missed the playoffs (or have a non-playoff team's pick) enter the draft lottery.
There are four balls numbered 1 to 14 in the lottery machine.
Each of the 16 teams has a four-number combinations out of a possible 1,001 four-number combinations (there is one redraw combo, which allows the league to split 1,000 by 16), and fans will be able to follow along as each ball, one-by-one, pops out of the machine.
The percentage each team has of winning the lottery is determined by the final regular-season standings and Board of Governors, with the worse teams getting more combinations. The NHL's last-place team, the Sharks, received 185 combinations; the Blackhawks received 135.
After the first draw for the No. 1 pick, the odds for the remaining teams will increase on a proportionate basis for the second draw, based on which team won the first draw.
However, if a team outside the top 11 won the lottery's first draw, they would jump up the maximum 10 spots and the Sharks would keep the No. 1 pick. Then a draw for the next available pick would commence.

Matthew Schaefer is the near-consensus No. 1 overall prospect. The Canadian 17-year-old defenseman had seven goals and 15 assists in 17 games in the Ontario Hockey League with the Erie Otters.
Michael Misa, a Canadian 18-year-old center/left winger, is projected at No. 2. He poured in 62 goals and 72 assists in 65 regular-season games for 134 points this season with the Saginaw Spirits in the OHL.
