Detroit Pistons general manager Trajan Langdon doesn't have much to work with in the upcoming NBA draft, but that may be a good sign.
The 2025 NBA Draft will take place from June 25-26, with the first night airing on ABC and the second night airing on ESPN. But unless the Pistons trade up for a higher pick, they won't be on the clock in Round 1 for the first time since 2018.
That's because the Pistons traded their what ended up being their 2025 first-rounder in the 2020 draft to the Houston Rockets for the No. 16 overall pick, who turned into the team's longest-tenured player Isaiah Stewart. The pick was top-13 protected this year, but ended up at No. 18 after the team made the playoffs with a 44-38 record.
With Stewart, an unexpected playoff run and a host of other homegrown players like Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, Ausar Thompson and Ron Holland, Detroit should be happy to convey the 2025 pick, which will free it up — after this draft is completed — to trade any future first-round pick over the next seven years, plus swaps.
The Pistons also traded their 2025 second-round pick (No. 48). After a host of trades, that pick has been re-routed to the Milwaukee Bucks.
But the Pistons do have a second-round selection, No. 37 overall, acquired from the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 Tim Hardaway Jr. trade, with the pick originally held by the Toronto Raptors.
MITCH ALBOM: Pistons elimination hurts like hell – and that's what will make them better
Here's what the Pistons current draft stockpile looks like going forward:
The Pistons don't have their own first (traded in 2020), but have one second-round pick acquired from the Mavericks in the Hardaway trade at last year's draft.
The Pistons lost their original second-round pick to the Clippers as part of the 2020 draft Luke Kennard trade which got them Saddiq Bey, a pick the Bucks currently own.
ANALYSIS: Pistons 2025 free agents: From Beasley to Hardaway Jr., here's the situation
Detroit owns its first-round pick in 2026 but sent its second-round pick to the Clippers as part of the Kennard trade. That pick will be re-routed either to the Orlando Magic or New York Knicks depending on how the standings shake out.
The Pistons will receive either the Wizards' or the Nets' 2027 second-round pick as part of the 2021 DeAndre Jordan trade with the Nets, whichever pick finishes in a less favorable slot.
Detroit also owns the Bucks second-rounder, acquired as part of the KJ Martin Jr. trade with the 76ers in February.
There's a lot of complicated potential draft shuffling here, but this is the summary:
The Pistons own their original first and second-round picks, but their second-round pick could be sent to the 76ers if it lands among the top 25 picks in the round.
Detroit could have three additional seconds: One from the Hornets or Clippers, one from the Heat and one from the Knicks.
However, any one of those three picks could be sent to the Jazz depending on how teams finish in the 2028 standings.
This one is easier to follow.
The Pistons have the Bucks second-rounder acquired in the 2023 Joe Harris trade with the Nets, and control the Knicks' second-rounder acquired at the 2024 trade deadline in the Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks deal.
When the Pistons traded Monte Morris to the T'wolves at the 2024 trade deadline, they also received Minnesota's 2030 second-round pick.
