There is news with the Arizona Cardinals that probably nobody saw coming. It isn't about their head coaching vacancy. It is about one of their coaches.

In the surprise of the offseason, former Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing was hired by the Detroit Lions to be their OC, according to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.

The Lions fired John Morton after one season as offensive coordinator after Ben Johnson was hired to be the Chicago Bears' head coach.

The Cardinals were 23rd in scoring in 2025 and 31st in rushing, but in 2024 they were 12th in scoring and seven in rushing.

How did Petzing end up connected to the Lions with Dan Campbell, their head coach?

Well, the Lions were looking to add an experienced playcaller, something that Petzing did for three years under head coach Jonathan Gannon. Petzing is connected to Johnson. They both coached at Boston College before both went to the NFL and Petzing was a groomsman for Johnson's wedding.

Cardinals fans will find this hiring surprising, as Petzing's playcalling was often criticized, especially this past season. However, transforming the offense from a run-first attack to a pass-happy offense when Jacoby Brissett took over at quarterback showed versatility, even though the Cardinals didn't score more than 20 offensive points in their final seven games of the season.
