May 20—GRAND FORKS — Drayton-Valley-Edinburg junior Elizabeth Fedje was a little tentative to start the 2025 North Dakota indoor track and field season.

Fedje, best known for her prowess in the hurdles and jumps, was coming off a meniscus injury suffered at the end of the volleyball season. She had the same surgery on her other knee the previous season, too.

"You never know coming in without anywhere to practice outside before the season, and you come in with cold feet and don't know," Fedje said. "The indoor season was important for me to know I could accomplish what I could accomplish before."

Fedje's concerns were quickly squashed.

Fedje, a Hoople, N.D., native who attends Valley-Edinburg High School, takes the No. 1 seed into this weekend's North Dakota Class B state track and field meet in Bismarck.

More than that, Fedje's best jump of 5-foot-7 ranks 87th nationally. Fedje, who was an all-region volleyball selection in the fall, is also seeded second in the 300 hurdles.

Fedje has qualified for the state meet in eight events but needs to choose a maximum of four to compete.

Part of the decision involves scheduling conflicts with the high jump.

Fedje learned that the hard way last season when she didn't make the state meet podium after attempting a height of 5-feet immediately following a 400 meters on the track.

Fedje also is motivated to fight back at this year's state meet on the track after losing by .02 seconds in the 300 hurdles last year.

"It definitely tells you what coming in second feels like, especially when it was so close to first," Fedje said.

Fedje enters this year's state meet seeded behind the same runner, Sophia Headley of Bowman County, who edged Fedje in a photo finish last season.

Fedje is one of the state's top hurdlers despite Drayton-Valley-Edinburg not having a track surface to use. The hurdlers run the carpet hallways of Drayton High School to practice.

In the high jump, the team also uses a mat in the school's gymnasium.

Fedje, however, takes advantage of resources in the offseason — particularly a camp at North Dakota State.

"I went to NDSU camp and it helped to learn from amazing college athletes on how to do form and what kind of workouts you can do yourself or drills to do for warm-ups," Fedje said.

Fedje's high school track and field coach is her mom, Jodi Fedje.

Jodi said her daughter has been able to consistently clear 5-foot-2 this season and the recent goal is to make 5-4 the consistent benchmark.

"You're not always going to get a PR," Jodi said. "When she got 5-7, it was nice that day and she had fresh legs and wasn't pulled away by a track event. It's all those factors, but she was also very close at 5-8."

Elizabeth said she does her best when she focuses on herself and not a place in a meet.

"I don't like to share my hopes and dreams, but I'm definitely hoping to stay focused and really hit new PRs," she said. "Whenever I reach for places, I don't do my best, so I'm hoping to do my best, stay focused and really accomplish what I think I can."
