Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has no problem with the flag that gave Colts kicker Spencer Shrader a second, shorter chance to make the game-winning field goal on Sunday.

Payton put the blame for the leverage penalty squarely on himself in his Monday press conference with Broncos beat reporters.

Denver linebacker Dondrea Tillman lined up in a different spot than he usually occupies on field goal block, and Tillman placed his left hand on Indianapolis offensive lineman Dalton Tucker’s back to get himself higher in the air.

“The call was correct,” Payton told Denver reporters. “You can, as the defensive line, you can push down on the back of the center and offensive lineman. You can push down on the back, specifically if you’re going to go internally on the guards. You can’t push and jump.”

A common technique, Payton elaborated further, is to have one player push down on the offensive linemen, in order to clear space for another player to leap into the air to block.

Tillman’s mistake was pushing to get himself in the air. Payton, a veteran NFL head coach who spent four years on the league’s competition committee, has a good understanding of the rule.

“That was leveraging,” Payton said. “You can’t put your hands to elevate yourself off one of your own guys, or off one of the opponent’s players, but my big regret flying home was that’s more for a closer field goal.”

Denver used a specific block that the Broncos installed for a game-ending field goal, an alignment designed to hopefully get a key block like the one former Denver safety Justin Simmons pulled off by jumping over the offensive line to beat the Saints when Payton was coaching in New Orleans.

But Indianapolis was attempting a 60-yard field goal with a low probability of a make, and in hindsight, Payton believes the Broncos should have gone with a normal block.

“That’s on me, in that situation,” Payton said. “It’s not on (special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi), it’s not on Tillman. … That’s more for a gimme than for a 60-yard attempt.”

The leveraging penalty gave Shrader a second chance from 45 yards, a much more makeable kick that Shrader drilled home to give Indianapolis a 29-28 win.
