We have camping and backpacking threads but nothing for day hikes.

I took the family and met up with a close friend and his family at Barnhardt Waterfall trail.

The trailhead is about 5 miles west of Rye which is south of Payson.

The hike was stated 6 miles but my GPS tracked it closer to 7. It was a real rugged and rocky trail with a steep climb, probably close to 2K elevation gain

It was hot and humid so it made the hike more difficult and I was spent at the end.

Got some good pics.

Hoping to go do sunset crater trails or something this weekend. Always have wanted to, never have and flag looks like 75 degrees!

Nice! I've never been to that area. Looks like there are all sorts of trails around there. I'll have to check it out.

I didn't even see this thread. I had been posting in the backpacking thread. I've been a day hiker only so far and have done plenty. I've been driving through Arizona recently and have been reminded of the natural beauty and amazing hiking opportunities. I really want to get into backpacking soon, even if it is just an overnighter. It's been relatively mild in Las Vegas lately.

Day hikes are what we do when we don't have the time, resources or family support to do a longer backpacking trip. I have been posting my dayhikes in the other thread, like you, most aren't even a full time, most are just an hour or two. They are great fun, though I feel like I have done most of the ones around here in the Medford area. Still way better to repeat a short "dayhike" than to go to the gym and do the stairmaster or whatever.

Oh yeah hiking is way better than the gym and you can get a better workout anyway. I like to go to red rock national conservatory in Las Vegas. Every time I go I love it more than I did the last time. A lot of tourists do the popular hikes along the park’s loop road or go there to take pictures. if you go into the spring mountains that overlook the park there are some incredible hikes that are very challenging, but can be done in one day. Just have to be careful because there aren’t always many people that go out there to hike. At the most I only encounter a handful of people on my hikes and sometimes I don’t see anyone. A lot of local hikers go to Mount Charleston area near Vegas to hike, but this past summer the hurricane washed out some of the trails. Hopefully they re-open in the spring. I’ve heard the trails have been repaired, but now there’s already a lot of snowfall. Before I move away from here I want to hike to Charleston Peak. I’ll probably backpack that one since it is 16 miles and almost 5,000 feet elevation gain.

If you guys are ever in Vegas there is a quick hike that takes about 30 mins or less to get some good views of the area. It’s “lone mountain” on the northwest part of town. It’s a quick one, but it is steep. It definitely beats a 30 min hotel workout!

Volcanoes National Park. Kīlauea caldera, one of the world’s most active volcanos. If you look to the back there is steam coming from Halema’ uma’u which is a pit crater within the Kīlauea caldera that has had a lot of activity in the 2000’s most recently September 2023.

There are a lot of hiking trails here. If you ever go to the big island it is a great day trip and multiple hikes for all levels.

Just doing a rock scramble in the cold wind of red rock canyon. The best part of Las Vegas won’t be found on the strip.
