Alaric Jackson was hit with a health scare this offseason, merely three months after signing a $57.75 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams. Just a few weeks ago, Jackson was diagnosed with blood clots in his leg, something he dealt with previously in 2022.
The Rams acted quickly and signed veteran left tackle D.J. Humphries to a one-year deal, just in case Jackson is forced to miss time this season.
The finer details of Humphries’ contract have finally emerged and they give us an indication of how the Rams view him. According to Over The Cap, Humphries’ contract is for one year and $2.5 million. It includes $2.34 million guaranteed, giving him a cap hit of $2.36 million for the upcoming season.
By no means is that a cheap deal, nor one that suggests he’s merely a camp body while Jackson is out. He could very well be the team’s starting left tackle in Week 1.
If the Rams were to cut Humphries, they would take on $2.34 million in dead money and only save $18,824 in cap space. In other words, there would be no real benefit to cutting him, so he’s highly likely to make the 53-man roster and potentially start at left tackle.
Humphries’ one-year deal with the Chiefs last year was for $5 million with only $1.5 million guaranteed, so the Rams actually gave him more guaranteed money this year than the Chiefs did in 2024.
The Rams couldn’t have found a much better option at left tackle after learning of Jackson’s diagnosis, so they were probably happy to see Humphries was still on the market. He’s a former first-round pick who has started 100 games in his career, earning one Pro Bowl selection in 2021.
There are a lot of questions surrounding the left tackle position, which Sean McVay admitted himself, but at least the Rams can feel good about Humphries as a potential starter early in the year.
