Eberechi Eze scored a sensational goal at Wembley - Getty Images/Catherine Ivill
Aston Villa may have support of the proverbial Palace, but it is the venerable Palace of south-east London who return to Wembley on May 17 for a shot at greatness.
For Crystal Palace, 174 years without a trophy, or 119 depending on when one marks the start date of one of England’s oldest clubs, this could yet be the year zero. The best era in the club’s history for top-flight longevity embraces another chance at its first major honour. Oliver Glasner, watched by three of his most celebrated Palace predecessors, delivered a superb performance – outfoxing Villa at every turn.
There was no Prince William at Wembley to watch his beloved Villa, the heir to the throne representing the British state at the funeral Mass for Pope Francis, although the president of the Football Association may have recognised this Villa performance. For all their great days this season, Villa are also capable of delivering others as insipid as this one.
For Eberechi Eze, it was a splendid afternoon, sweeping the first goal past Emiliano Martinez on 31 minutes. That was made by Ismaila Sarr, an outstanding performer who scored twice in the second half and edged Eze as the game’s most influential player. The Argentinian World Cup winner in goal for Villa might have done more to save the first two but then you could have said that about so many of Villa’s players on this day.
Their captain John McGinn, the indefatigable Scottish general, was nothing like his cannonball presence against Paris Saint Germain and Newcastle United this month. Ollie Watkins, playing ahead of the absentee Marcus Rashford, barely had a sight of goal. Morgan Rogers drifted out the game. Unai Emery’s team never tried to grab the game by the throat in the early stages and instead it came to grab them.
It was Palace’s day even in spite of a missed penalty from Jean-Philippe Mateta who, that miscalculation aside, had an excellent game leading the line. Glasner picked a five-man defence that stifled Villa – and then Palace hit hard on the transition of possession. They did have a fine performance in goal from Dean Henderson who saved everything – as opposed to Martinez who could have done much better.

In the stands, Glasner’s immediate predecessor Roy Hodgson sat with Palace chairman Steve Parish. Elsewhere the cameras picked out Steve Coppell, the Palace manager in the 1990 FA Cup final replay defeat, and Alan Smith who was Coppell’s successor. The club has been through many convulsions, including administration, multiple relegations and all the attendant indignities, but now they have stability and a very good team and manager. They will likely approach the final against either Nottingham Forest or Manchester City as underdogs again, but they like it that way.
Certainly Palace’s record against Villa is superb. They have beaten Emery’s side in four of their last five encounters, including three this season in the league and in both Cups.
A beautiful goal from Eze, struck with his right foot and with both feet off the ground to get the right twist of the body that delivered the right loft and fade on the shot. He struck it from the edge of the box and had no real room for error, the ball coming across the front of the area from the right from Sarr, who had chased the ball down.
It was a glorious finish but in the moments before there were chances for Villa to close down Sarr who had first chased the ball down from Pau Torres then collected it out on the left and finally worked the ball to Eze. Again, the shot itself was close to Martinez but the Villa goalkeeper just seemed to react sluggishly. It was past him.
A couple of minutes earlier, Sarr had done the same ambush on Ezri Konsa and just clipped the Villa man’s foot in the act. Glasner wagged a disapproving finger at the decision to give the foul. Mateta had scored in the seconds that followed, a confidently assertive finish when he was played in by Sarr.
Palace had that in all their attacking. They turned the ball over quickly and then they were direct. Mateta had another run down the left when he got away from Boubacar Kamara and then Konsa. They looked sharp when they had the ball and they did not wait around.
Villa, by contrast, looked nothing like the side that had beaten PSG and Newcastle the previous week. With the exception of Morgan Rogers on the right wing it felt like none of the usual attackers had really made much of a scratch on Palace in the first half. Rogers drew Tyrick Mitchell into a booking in the first half with a strong run. Konsa had a header well-saved by Henderson.
The penalty came after Villa’s best period at the start of the second half. On 51 minutes, Adam Wharton slipped in Eze who drew the foul from Kamara. Mateta’s penalty was mystifyingly off-target. Wharton again began the move for Sarr’s first goal, stealing possession from Youri Tielemans and from there it ended up at the feet of Mateta who played in Sarr for a shot.

— Match of the Day (@BBCMOTD) April 26, 2025
Then in the very final moments of the game with Villa stretched, another classic Palace counterpunch. This time it was the substitute Eddie Nketiah who won the ball from Konsa and then played in Sarr. It was a sign of his confidence by that stage that Sarr never looked likely to miss. A chastening afternoon for Villa.
The third FA Cup final of Palace’s history and the first where they will not face Manchester United. They will be very hard to beat.

The world’s best? Martinez is not even the best in the Midlands
Before kick-off, in front of over 34,000 Aston Villa supporters, Emiliano Martinez was loudly announced as the best goalkeeper in the world.
After this curiously poor performance from Villa in the FA Cup semi-final and, in particular, their larger-than-life Argentinian World Cup winner, that claim appeared rather suspect.
Martinez is the pantomime villain who usually comes alive when the pressure is on at big events, but this was not an evening he will want to remember.
Questions have to be asked over his culpability in both of Crystal Palace’s first two goals, coming just four days after a costly mistake in the Premier League defeat at Manchester City.

Unai Emery’s verdict
They deserved to win, they played better than us. The first goal made it more difficult because in transitions they are a very good team.
We have to accept it. We were very motivated, but we lost and we have to keep going.
When I arrived here two years ago we were in a bad moment. We have progressed so quickly – two semi-finals, a quarter-final – and that has increased the demands on us.
Commiserations to our fans and congratulations to Crystal Palace.
[On Marcus Rashford] I told you before the game, he’s injured.

Oliver Glasner’s reaction
All the credit goes to the players. They had to work so hard and overcome a few difficult moments, especially after we missed a penalty. It was an unbelievable performance - the players really stuck the plan and they never lost their head.
We had to make small adjustments today. Villa play with a narrow front four and use the No6s to play passes with one touch into the pocket. We asked the three attackers (Eze, Sarr and Mateta) to control their two 6s and their two centre-halves. Then when they passed to the full-backs, our wing-backs jumped and that’s how we scored the first goal.
The second goal was an unbelievable counter-press from Adam Wharton. Then you had JP tackling Barkley who would have had a clear shot. All these efforts helped us to win and keep a clean sheet.
[On the slow start to the second] Everybody stayed calm in the club. We always had a great togetherness and we knew of we kept going we would get our reward.
The players have four days off. They should celebrate and enjoy the moment with our fans. I don’t know if I will - I feel exhausted!

John McGinn gives the Villa reaction
There’s obviously massive disappointment. The manager spoke at length to remind us how far we’ve come as a group; that’s not to get away from the disappointment today.
The manager doesn’t have to rant and rave, we’ll use the hurt to come back stronger next season. We’ve got a really important last four games to try to get back in the Champions League. We can’t be disappointed for too long.
We weren’t at our best, that’s clear. I don’t think anyone watching the game could say Crystal Palace didn’t deserve to win. They’re set up to counter and they’re one of the best teams in the country at it.
We’re building something special, everyone can see that, and we won’t let a day like today disrupt that. But at the moment it stings. Sometimes football comes and punches you in the face.
07:24 PM BST
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish speaks to BBC Sport
Superb, wasn’t it? I thought they were excellent. When the man of the match went up, I thought, ‘You could give it to every single one of them.’ We defended excellently, took our chances and showed mental fortitude to get over the penalty miss. All credit to the manager and the players – and look what it means to the fans.
I thought today was a real celebration for the fans of two teams who haven’t won a lot of honours in recent times – for us, never – and it meant so much to both sets of fans. We stand on the edge of doing something we’ve never done before, which is fantastic.
[On Oliver Glasner] I never had any doubt. Watching him work... what you see in interviews, that’s who he is. He doesn’t have a dark side, he loves football, he always believes we can win and he instils that in the players.

It’s a special day. I’m grateful to God for the opportunity to play here and win and go to the final. Now we want to go all the way.
[On his goal] I’m always trying my luck, always taking shots. We work on this stuff all the time.
[On Ismaila Sarr] Hr’s top. I probably got this [the player of the match award] a bit prematurely, so I’ll be giving to him inside!
[On the final] We’re not fearful of facing anyone. I hope we can do it.

Full time: Crystal Palace 3 Aston Villa 0
1990, 2016 and now 2025: Crystal Palace are into the FA Cup final for only the third time in the history. This match was the stuff of Oliver Glasner’s dreams, with his gameplan working almost perfectly. In truth, the scoreline – emphatic though it is – flatters Villa.
Ebere Eze and Ismaila Sarr scored terrific goals either side of a missed penalty from Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Sarr raced clear to add a third in injury-time. Never mind the result; Palace’s performance was just immense.

That feels like a huge moment for Villa if they are to salvage this semi-final.
Emiliano Martinez has a reputation for saving penalties but did not even need to get a touch on Jean-Philippe Mateta’s spot kick there.
Was Boubacar Kamara fortunate to stay on the pitch? The Villa midfielder was booked in the first half and was the player who brought down Eberechi Eze in the area.
There was a brief confrontation between the two benches, with Palace manager Oliver Glasner clashing with Villa’s set-piece coach Austin MacPhee.

Half-time verdict
Crystal Palace are deservedly ahead but in the final ten minutes of that half Aston Villa did produce some moments of menace.
Eberechi Eze has been the game’s standout and really is a wonderful player to watch when he controls matches like this.
Unai Emery’s big performers have not produced so far, so this feels like an important half-time for the Villa manager to get his message across.
Emery does have options on the bench, including Jacob Ramsey and Donyell Malen, but needs the likes of Ollie Watkins and Marco Asensio to step up first.
06:07 PM BST
Should Martinez have saved Eze’s shot?
The BBC pundits, Wayne Rooney and Glenn Murray, think Emi Martinez should have done better on Eze’s goal. The shot was fairly central, and he got a touch on it, but it was viciously struck.

The managers talk to BBC Sport
Oliver Glasner
We’re all very excited and looking forward to this game. Great atmosphere, fantastic stadium. These are the games everybody wants to play in. We feel good, we’re in really good shape so let’s go.
When you play a team like Aston Villa you have to perform at the top level. We know how they play and if are very disciplined in our defending, and don’t give them space, then we will get our chances.
Unai Emery
I have massive respect for them. They have a successful coach and are experienced at Premier League level. They deserve to be here because they are performing very well.

Unai Emery’s bogey team
Unai Emery has transformed Aston Villa in two-and-half-years and returned the club to the Champions League, but Crystal Palace have always presented him with problems.
Palace are unbeaten in their last four meetings against Emery’s Villa, winning three of them.
One of those victories was earlier this season in the Carabao Cup, so Palace have the chance to knock Villa out of the other domestic competition at the semi-final stage.
Emery always comes alive on big stages like this, however, and can never be written off.

Holding FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley is a joke
By Jim White
This weekend, thousands will be heading to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-finals. And in many ways, when Aston Villa face Crystal Palace and Manchester City take on Nottingham Forest, it will be a significant day out for the club’s fans. Unlike at the final, when large numbers of the tickets are allocated to sponsors, FA guests and corporate hangers-on, these games will be watched almost entirely by the club’s devotees. Around 35,000 from each side will file through the gates, many on their first visit to the national stadium. The atmosphere will be partisan and noisy. Exactly what you want at a game of this status.
So it may seem a little harsh to deny the faithful that opportunity. But the fact is Wembley should not even be a consideration to host the semi-finals. They belong elsewhere. More than that, to hold them at Wembley is to undermine a fundamental part of what the FA Cup is all about.

Alan Pardew: If we had beaten Man Utd, Sir Alex would probably have gone
By Jason Burt
The FA Cup has helped define Alan Pardew. Three times, first as player, then twice as a manager, he has been dramatically denied in the final after extraordinary campaigns to get there.
Two of those finals – and an iconic semi-final when he scored the extra-time winning goal against Liverpool – are considered among the greatest ties in the competition’s illustrious 153-year history.
Before Crystal Palace’s semi-final against Aston Villa on Saturday, Telegraph Sport talked to Pardew, the former Palace midfielder and manager, about what happened in 1990 and 2016 – the only other occasions when Palace reached the final – and when he managed West Ham United in the 2006 final.

Good afternoon
Hello and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s live, minute-by-minute coverage of Crystal Palace v Aston Villa at Wembley. This is a rare treat: an FA Cup semi-final involving two teams who a) haven’t won the competition for ages, on in Palace’s case ever and b) are serious contenders to win it this year.
Even with the recent improvement of Manchester City, who play Nottingham Forest tomorrow in the second semi-final, this feels like the most open FA Cup in a while. After a brief blip, Palace reminded everyone of their quality at the Emirates on Wednesday; and though Villa lost agonisingly at the Etihad 48 hours earlier, they remain one of the form teams in the country. Both sides are lethal on the counter-attack, which should make for a fascinating tactical battle.
“As a coach my challenge when I arrived here was to get some trophies along the way,” said Villa’s head coach Unai Emery. “We have an opportunity because we are in the semi-final, but there is a lot of work to do.
“I want to enjoy the semi-final about everything we are going to do. Travelling to London, being together, preparing the match, meeting tomorrow morning, the atmosphere in Wembley. The objective is to win, but the process is really important.”
For some teams just getting to Wembley for the semi-finals is a defining achievement. But, like Emery, Oliver Glasner was keen to stress that Palace don’t see things that way.
“Of course playing a semi-final is always great and it shows how well we have done in the competition, until now. But it’s just a semi-final. We’ll enjoy it, it’s the biggest stadium in England, it’s very traditional and we can play in front of 40,000 Crystal Palace fans. It’s a game. I don’t want to make it bigger than it is. It’s a football game and we feel well-prepared.”
Kick off 5.15pm.
