This is not a holdout, and this is not new. Dallas Cowboys defensive end Micah Parsons was a no-show on Tuesday as the club had their second day of OTA activity, and the first of the new season open to the media. Parsons, who has been angling for an extension since he became eligible prior to last season, was also a spotty attendant during the 2024 OTA sessions. And the 2023 sessions. In other words, despite wanting to work out a new deal, Parsons' absence isn't really related to the obvious goal.

The Cowboys are off on Wednesday, as they've structured their first and third sessions at a two-days-on, off-day, third-day structure, and will return to the practice field at The Star in Frisco on Thursday. Parsons also isn't fundamentally staying away from the team, as he's been at the facility several times over the offseason, according to new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

“He showed up a little bit the last couple days,” Schottenheimer said via the Forth-Worth Star Telegram. “He’s been in and out some. I don’t know if he’s here yet. Had a great lunch with him yesterday. But again, when he’s here, he’s been great. And again, it’s all voluntary. So guys are in and out, some guys come to meetings, some guys come to practice, some guys are just here getting treatment and things like that. And that’s not just specific to Micah, it’s specific to all the guys.”

Parsons and the club are looking to agree to an extension that will keep him in Dallas for the foreseeable future. The steal of the 2021 draft at No. 12 overall, the beginning of Parsons' career as a sack artist have only been accomplished by the likes of the great Reggie White. Parsons has started his career with four-straight years of at least 12 sacks, with 52.5 career QB takedowns.

As a former first-round pick, the Cowboys have a fifth-year option on Parsons, which will pay him just over $24 million in salary this season. An extension is expected to make him the highest-paid non-QB ever. Dallas already employs the highest-paid player ever in Dak Prescott and the third-highest paid WR ever in CeeDee Lamb.

The Cowboys are once again breaking in a new defensive coordinator, this time Matt Eberflus, without their star player attending the on-field portions of the installation phase.
