Country singer Conner Smith allegedly strikes and kills woman in crosswalk in car accident

Country singer Conner Smith was involved in a fatal car crash in Nashville in which he allegedly hit and killed a 77-year-old woman walking in a crosswalk.

According to a news release from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, a pedestrian identified as Dorothy Dobbins died Sunday night after she was struck by a vehicle on 3rd Avenue North near Van Buren Street.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by Conner Smith, 24, was traveling north on 3rd Avenue North as Dobbins was crossing the roadway," the release said. "It appears that she was inside a marked crosswalk when she was struck around 7:30 p.m. Dobbins, who lived nearby, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died."

Police said that Smith showed no signs of impairment at the time of the accident, and "the preliminary contributing factor for this crash appears to be Smith failing to yield the right of way to the pedestrian."

No charges have been filed "at present," authorities said, and the investigation is ongoing.

An attorney for Smith, Worrick G. Robinson, confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that his client was "involved in a car accident that tragically claimed a life" and added, "His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins' family during this incredibly difficult time. Mr. Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation."

That’s really tragic

And there better be charges filed since he was at fault

I wonder how tall she was

With those big trucks often times the top of the hood is as tall or taller than kids and shorter people.

Another article had his people saying, "He was not impaired and was not using a cell phone while driving." Quick to put that part about the cell phone out there. Wouldn't be surprised if he was distracted in some way. At least it sounds like he stuck around and took responsibility.

Extra sad - she was walking her dog on a leash. Walking it back from the dog park. So her dog witnessed her get killed like that.

Why are charges required? Accidents happen. This one has already claimed one life and damaged others...including the driver. Throwing him in prison just harms him more and spreads the suffering to his family as well.
That logic makes no sense.

Would be different if he had been drunk or doing 80 mph in town.
But he wasn't. He just failed to see a pedestrian.
At worst, make the guy hold a benefit concert to help her family.

You just don’t “hit a woman in a crosswalk “. He was not paying attention at best

Yeah. It's what is called an accident. Unless there is indication he intended to hit her?
So if someone accidentally leaves their child in a car and they get heatstroke or they leave their child unattended for a few seconds and they drown then that’s OK?

Leaving a kid in a car is a totally different thing.
None of it is "okay" and I never said it was.
But crap happens sometimes. It's not necessary for anyone else to suffer for it...accidents are not criminal acts. Often stupid..sometimes irresponsible...but not criminal.

Be honest...your driving to work...you hit a pothole as your sipping your coffee...you drop the cup in your crotch...in the split second pants reaction of trying to protect your balls from the boiling hot coffee... you hit someone with your car.
Would you honestly feel you deserve 10 to 15 years in prison for that? Destroying your career, probably your marriage, and nearly any chance of success once you get out. Being branded the rest of your life as a consistent and a felon...causing your family and those you love immense pain and grief...honestly? Because of a fraction of a second in an otherwise good and just life?
Not to mention all the danger, suffering, physical, and psychological damage that is likely in prison with legit killers....

Or was it an accident that you feel terrible about and will have to live with the rest of your life?
