Does anyone know where to find his stats for each month for Goldy, April, May and June? I bet it would be interesting. Goldy, you had a great month. One for the books. Congrats!!!

Congratulations to Goldy. I guess it was the ridiculous coaching strategies of watching the ball leave the pitchers' hand vs. following it to the plate ... and "lift" -- trying to hit every ball into the air.

My guess would be that Pollock and Descalso were the only ones who knew better, but Goldy was a good soldier.

With the development of Pollock replacing Goldy's previously missing bat, we will now have a solid batting order of

2) Goldy
3) Lamb
4) Pollock
5) Peralta
6) Souza
7) Murphy

Righty/lefty/righty/lefty/righty/righty

With Descalso at 2B against righties in the rotation of Marte at 2B/SS and Ahmed at SS (against lefties), that is a very solid 1-8. And Jay as the 4th outfielder.

Thanks, at least that was proof he declined and was not in a slump. Oh wait, an OPS of .945 in April, .530 in May and 1.198 in June. Textbook slump. Look up slump in the dictionary and his picture and stats are there. Sorry, it had to be said. As long as he continues, it is all good. Blame it on what you want, it was a slump, not a decline.

If that was directed at me, I said I didn't consider Goldy's massive drop in performance, starting last season, to be a slump. But I also did not say he declined.

I said there had to be a reason for it and offered eyesight problems as one possibility, because I saw him squinting in closeup shots. We'll never know.

But we now do know that it was the coaching staff's obsession with judging a pitch as it left the pitchers hand rather than following its path to the plate. And trying to "lift" every ball into the air.

He neither declined nor slumped. He was an obedient victim of sabermetrics.

Yes you did say it was a decline. I will not waste the energy to prove otherwise. It doesn’t matter. You are older than me, a rare feat in itself, and I respect your opinion. We both want the DBacks to succeed, so let’s leave it at that. Peace, my friend.

PS, 82 and I had questions about him seeing the ball last year. His stats were decent but he looked awkward at the plate.

OK, I guess you can consider eyesight problems to be a decline. But I still feel strongly that it was not a slump, for the two reasons I posted.

Who cares! He's baaaaack that's all I care about. I'm guilty too, the longer the slump went on I started to fear that he was declining in some way. Super thrilled to be totally wrong! :) Congrats Goldy!

What is a decline if not protracted slumps?

It's hard to distinguish a periodic/specific slump versus a clear indication of a decline...until we have a longer duration of time/larger sample size to analyze... Let's see where his 2018 stats finish up. And even then I would argue we would still need more data, perhaps at minimum the first half of 2019, in order to clearly identify anything that could suggest a decline.

I guess it is semantics cut I think of a decline as being more permanent and a slump as being temporary. But as Bert says, who cares?

I don't listen to the press, they try to create news now, not report it. I watch enough games it has to pass my eye test. I think you do the same. It is just banter, I enjoy it. I watch baseball for entertainment and I love talking about it. Everyone has their own opinion. That is how it should be.

Good post!

My eye test saw Goldy squinting so I suggested that he might be having eye problems.

And I have felt all along that the coaching staff pushing "lift" was causing too many popups and strikeouts.

So when I read that the team was being encouraged to determine where the pitch would be as soon as it leaves the pitcher's hand rather than following the path to the plate, it made sense.

But, yes, all that matters is that SuperGoldy is back.
