The Seattle Seahawks were faced with two paths this offseason: extend their soon-to-be 35 year old starter for the past three seasons, Geno Smith... or go in a different direction with someone younger and less expensive. The Seahawks opted to go with the latter. Seattle traded Geno Smith, a quarterback who had guided the team to three-consecutive winning seasons, to the Las Vegas Raiders and signed Sam Darnold after his explosive season with the Minnesota Vikings.
This was a gamble the Seahawks made, there's no question about it. As a result, this will be one of the more compelling side-stories the 12th Man will be following. After all, it is only natural to be curious about the road not taken. Here at Seahawks Wire, we are happy to help scratch that curiosity itch. We will be updating the 12's out there all season long about how both quarterbacks are doing.
Through three weeks, the Seahawks and Raiders are trending in literally opposite directions. Las Vegas opened the season with a road win, but have dropped the last two in blowout fashion. Meanwhile Seattle started the season with a home loss, but won their next two games convincingly.
Sam Darnold was once again coldly efficient against the Saints en route to a 44-13 victory. Darnold completed 14-of-18 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns with a near-perfect passer rating of 154.2. Meanwhile, despite the Raiders being blown out 41-24, Geno Smith did play solid football. Smith completed 19-of-29 passes attempted for 289 yards and three touchdown passes (more than good enough for 27 points for my fantasy team).
