May 2—Abraham Perez's next scheduled opponent might not qualify as a big name in the boxing world, but he certainly has a long one: 24 letters from start to finish.
And in Perez's continuing quest to make a name for himself in boxing, a victory over Angel Geovanny Meza Morales might go a long way.
Meza Morales, an Ensenada, Baja California flyweight with a record of 9-3-3 with six knockouts, was announced on Friday as Perez's opponent on a July 12 card in El Paso.
Albuquerque's Perez (11-0, six KOs) made an impressive return to the ring on April 19 with a victory by second-round knockout over Jose Rodriguez Montemayor in the main event of a Legacy Promotions card at the Embassy Suites.
Perez hadn't fought since March 2024. While preparing for a scheduled Aug. 10 fight against fellow Albuquerquean Matt Griego-Ortega, Perez lost consciousness while doing breathing-control exercises in his family's swimming pool and spent several days on life support before making a complete recovery.
After his victory over Rodriguez Montemayor on April 19, Perez said he felt it was time for him to expand his career beyond New Mexico's borders. All of his first 11 bouts have taken place in the state.
El Paso, though, is home as well; Perez was born in the 915 — 26 years ago as of his birthday on Thursday.
The July 12 Kings Promotion (Marshall Kauffman) card is headlined by El Paso's Stephanie Han (10-0, three KOs), who's scheduled to defend her WBA lightweight title against Colombia's Bexcy Mateus (8-1, seven KOs).
Han is trained by Las Cruces' Louie Burke.
Two other New Mexico boxers, Albuquerque's Andres Rey (5-0, one KO) and Las Cruces' D'Angelo Sanchez (1-1, one KO), are scheduled to fight on the July 12 card. Like Perez, Rey was born in El Paso.
Meza Morales, based on his fight-by-fight record, likely qualifies as the best opponent Perez will have faced — based more on his three losses than on his nine victories. The fighters that defeated him entered those bouts with a combined record of 27-1. Two of those losses came by split decision.
Like Perez, Meza Morales is right-handed.
BKFC: As expected, a host of New Mexicans are scheduled to join Albuquerque headliner Donald Sanchez on the previously announced June 6 BKFC bare-knuckle fight card at Tingley Coliseum.
Among them: Eric Dodson, William Albrecht, Kyle McElroy, Lorenzo Coca and Adam Ramirez, all of Albuquerque; Derek Perez of Belen and Bryant McClain of Rio Rancho.
Albrecht, 46, and McElroy, 44, a pair of hit-and-get-hit light heavyweights, are matched against each other.
In the main event, Sanchez (4-1 bare knuckle) is scheduled to face Florida's David Mundell (9-1) for the latter's BKFC middleweight title.
THE MAGICIAN: John Dodson, Eric's older brother, is scheduled to face Tatakai Soya (12-6-1) Saturday night/Sunday morning on a Rizin Fight Federation MMA card in Tokyo.
It's a rematch of a July 2024 fight on a Rizin card in Saitama, Japan, won by Dodson (24-14) via unanimous decision — although the first meeting between the two was bare knuckle, not MMA. Dodson is the BKFC flyweight champion.
The card is scheduled to be streamed on rizin.tv at the price of $19.99, starting on Saturday at 10 p.m. MDT.
