With the Indianapolis Colts' veterans and rookies now all in the building together, running back Jonathan Taylor shared his initial impressions of first-round pick Tyler Warren.
"Just first coming in, very in-tune to detail, I will say that," Taylor said. "I mean, you're a rookie, so you're just trying to find your way. There's a lot of moving parts, but he has a very good attention to detail, which is awesome."
That attention to detail was a must for Warren coming out of Penn State, where he handled a variety of roles and responsibilities. Presumably, he's going to do the same for the Colts.
Given the Colts' need in the passing game from the tight end position, Warren's 100-plus catches in 2024 and the over 1,200 receiving yards that he accumulated are what likely stand out first about him.
However, going beyond Warren's ability to impact the game through the air, he brings an extremely well-rounded skill set to the NFL level. At Penn State, he lined up across the formation, including in the backfield at times, where he did get some carries, and Warren is also a very capable blocker in the run game.
When an offense has that do-it-all presence at the tight end position, it adds some unpredictability to that unit because defenses can't simply get a beat on what is coming based on who is in the game or where that player is lined up. This then not only creates opportunities for the tight end to exploit, but also for others in the offense as well.
Along with taking note of Warren's attention to detail, Taylor would also compare him to former Colts' tight end Jack Doyle.
Throughout Doyle's career with the Colts, he was someone who could impact both the run and passing games, as Warren did at Penn State, and that's a presence that the Indianapolis offense has been lacking since Doyle retired in 2021.
"I'm sure you guys have probably heard, but like Jack Doyle-esque type," Taylor said about Warren. "If you want a tight end, Jack Doyle, that's the one, he's the guy."
