Back on the practice field on Wednesday for the Indianapolis Colts was defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
Buckner last played in the Colts' Week 9 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In Week 10, he was placed on injured reserve. This is the first week that he is eligible to return to practice.
So what happened?
As Buckner described on Thursday, the neck injury happened in the first half of the Steelers game. Buckner got hit, felt what he thought was a stinger on his left side.
He got evaluated during the game and was cleared to return. Throughout the rest of that game, he felt the stinger sensation a "couple more times" but it was minor.
That Monday after the game, Buckner was again evaluated and passed, but on Wednesday, he noticed the ramifications of the injury.
“I came in on (Oct. 22) to lift in the morning and I couldn’t even do a push-up," Buckner said. "Kind of lost all strength in my left side. That’s when we got the scan and found out that I had a herniated disc that was pressing on a nerve that kind of affected all that.”
Buckner was then placed on IR, with the medical staff wanting to see if he could regain his strength over the next several weeks.
Buckner also traveled to Panama to meet with doctors, which was a "big part" of his recovery.
Buckner says he didn't experience any pain during Wednesday's practice and he feels that he is in a "great spot."
Even with missing the last several games, he is still second on the team in quarterback pressures. According to PFF, he also ranks 18th among his position group league-wide in run defense tackles, and again, does so while having missed time.
