Indianapolis Colts' defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo met with reporters on Wednesday.
In case you missed the press conference, here are the highlights from it:
- "It's been great," Anarumo said about having the players back in the building. The energy levels on and off the field have been "terrific."
- "Chris Ballard and his crew have done an amazing job of filling in some areas. We've added quality players at each level of the defense, so super excited about it," Anarumo said of the offseason.
- On Charvarius Ward, Anarumo mentions he's been a consistent cornerback for a long time. "He can matchup on the best receivers. He's got length to matchup on the bigger guys but he's quick enough to handle the shorter, faster guys," Anarumo said. "He's a full package."
- "He's up for that," Anarumo said of having Ward shadow receivers. It will be dependent upon the matchup.
- On Bynum, Anarumo notes his ability to fill a variety of roles. As a former corner, Bynum has coverage abilities, takes the ball away, and has been a consistent tackler. "He's super smart," Anarumo says and adds that Bynum has played in a few different systems so he has a good all-around feel. "He's bringing in a winning edge to our team."
- The experience that the Colts have in the secondary allows for Anarumo to adjust on the fly more quickly.
- The different skill sets that the Colts have in the secondary will allow Anarumo to make adjustments based on the opponent and what they do, which hopefully keeps the offense off-balanced.
- "Super gritty guy...he's really fast, he's tough," Anarumo said of Justin Walley. Anarumo also notes Walley's competitiveness.
- Anarumo says on third downs, you want cover guys on the field. It's not ideal for a defense to have linebackers covering tight ends in today's NFL. "More DBs out there in more pure passing situations is always something we've tried to do."
- "We've got some competition along each level of the group," Anarumo said of the defense.
- "It certainly helps them, it doesn't hurt," Anarumo said of Jaylon Carlies and Hunter Wohler's safety background at the linebacker spot.
- "JT brings so many different tools with him," Anarumo said of Tuimoloau. Mentions his ability to rush, defend the run, and play inside if needed. A player who has "had production at the highest level." Bynum, Ward, and Tuimoloua are used to winning, "all of that's stuff important."
- "That's a hungry group," Anarumo said of the defensive line room. Adds that group has a chip on their shoulder. "I'm betting on those guys."
