The quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones is a topic that probably every member of the Indianapolis Colts' offense is going to have to discuss at some point this offseason.

The most recent player to be asked about this training camp battle was wide receiver Alec Pierce, specifically at his position, how he navigates the competition.

“Basically, just be there for both of them," Pierce said. "Kind of communicate with both of them, treat them both like the starting quarterback and just ask what they need from me, like if they want to get extra balls or whatever because it is going to be like, with them just splitting reps or whatever we're just going to get less reps with each other.

"So like, anything they need extra from me, I just let them know I'm there for them.”

The starting reps between Jones and Richardson will be split, and as both Shane Steichen and Chris Ballard have said, there is no timeline for determining who the starter will be. Ultimatley, what Steichen wants to see is consistency, which includes the ability to steadily move the offense up and down the field, along with taking care of the football, and making good decisions.

Pierce put together a breakout season in 2023 and emerged as one of the most productive deep-threat wide receivers in the NFL. Pierce totaled 824 yards and did so at a whopping 22.3 yards per catch with seven touchdowns.

Of note, when it comes to Jones at quarterback, he has ranked near the bottom of the NFL the last two seasons in yards per pass attempt, and in 2022, his last full season, Jones ranked 75th out of 77 quarterbacks in downfield attempt rate, per PFF.

Pierce is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025. His focus, however, is on building upon what he established last season.

"I like to take a very day-to-day approach with things," Pierce said. "I don't really think too far in advance. Like right now, the whole offseason had been about getting my body healthy and ready to go for OTAs. And now OTAs is about me coming out here and just showing the work I put in this offseason. That I can do more things and show the coaches what I can do and show the team and build trust in me that I can be more well rounded and do things to help this offense."
