College Football Fans React to Major Cam Newton News originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Despite a 0.630 win percentage across 122 seasons and 14 double-digit win years, the Auburn Tigers have just two national championship-winning campaigns. In their most recent banner-hanging season, an undefeated BCS Championship-winning endeavor in 2010, Auburn housed a superstar quarterback, dual-threat passer Cam Newton.

On Monday, the National Football Foundation released the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, and it features a who's who of gridiron legends across all levels of the sport. Among the 79 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 100 players and 35 coaches from the lower divisions, one name stands tallest for the Auburn Tigers: the aforementioned Cam Newton.

The former Heisman Trophy winner and Auburn icon appears on the ballot for the first time, joining fellow Tigers Tommy Tuberville and Takeo Spikes, who return to the list after falling short of induction last year.

Newton's inclusion should elicit no pushback.

Though his Auburn tenure spanned just one season, his 2010 campaign is widely regarded as one of the greatest individual seasons in college football history. After transferring from Florida and spending a year at Blinn College, Newton arrived on the Plains and proceeded to dominate the sport. He led Auburn to a perfect 14-0 season and their second national title in school history, all while collecting every major award imaginable.

In that historic year, Newton threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores, earning the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, Davey O'Brien Award, SEC Offensive Player of the Year, and Consensus All-American honors.

Newton's impact on Auburn football remains unmatched in the modern era. Since his departure, Auburn has posted just two double-digit win seasons, underscoring the transformational effect of his presence on the program. Many fans are ready for Newton to be a first-ballot inductee.

"It's a no-brainer," said one fan shortly after the announcement of Newton's consideration for the College Football Hall of Fame.

Another fan took it a step further, saying, "Anyone who doesn't vote for Cam Newton on their ballot should be removed from the sports media."

"Shouldn't even be a discussion. Cam Newton is a first ballot HOFer," barked another fan.

Another fan put the Auburn passer in the same breath as two of the other most influential first-ballot hall of famers, saying, "Ingram, Suh, and Newton should for sure be first ballot. Donald and Moore, too, probably."

Finally, another fan simply said, "Let's go," with Newton making his first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot.

To earn induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, a nominee must secure at least 80% of the vote from the selection committee. Newton's legacy, accolades, and singular season of brilliance make him one of the most compelling candidates on the 2026 ballot.

Meanwhile, Tuberville went 85-40 as the head coach for Auburn from 1999 to 2008. As for Spikes, he was a two-time All-SEC member at linebacker.

The 2026 College Football Hall of Fame class will be announced in January.
