Clay Buchholz Is Paying Dividends For Arizona Diamondbacks In Four Starts

(Getty Images)
Going almost completely unnoticed, former Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz has had an impressive start with his new team—the Arizona Diamondbacks. Over four starts, the tall Texas righty has a sparkling 1.88 ERA, while holding hitters to a .191 average. On Wednesday night, he went six innings against the Giants—scattering seven hits and just two runs. Of course—given that the Universe revolves around the Red Sox—Buchholz gave up a solo shot to Pablo Sandoval. Folks, you just can't make this stuff up. Buchholz has not exactly been overpowering—but he is keeping his team in games and limiting damage. Frankly, you have to pull for the guy to succeed. We wish him the best for the balance of the 2018 season—unless, of course, we meet The Sons Of Torey Lovullo in the Fall Classic.

Almost every season, there seems to be a veteran pitcher who comes out of nowhere and provides solid fantasy value for a good portion of the season. Jason Vargas went 12-3 with a 2.62 ERA in 2017 before falling off the cliff in the second half. Ervin Santana went 16-8 with a 3.28 ERA last year after going 14-16 with a 3.61 ERA the previous two seasons. Enter Clay Buchholz. After four starts for Arizona, Buchholz is 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA, 21:3 strikeout-to-walk rate and a .191 opponent average. He was the fifth-most added player in ESPN leagues this week (third-most added pitcher behind Seattle’s Marco Gonzales and Oakland’s Frankie Montas). Does this mean Buchholz, a first-round pick by Boston

Clay Buchholz, staff savior? The Diamondbacks think so

Clay Buchholz saving a staff?

Yep, that’s right. Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen and manager Torey Lovullo certainly remember the good times with Buchholz in Boston, though they also remember the bad ones. Yet, when they were searching for a starter, with Robbie Ray on the disabled list with an oblique issue, Shelby Miller on rehab after Tommy John surgery, and Taijuan Walker out for the year following Tommy John surgery, the D-Backs decided to get creative and sign Buchholz to a minor league contract after the veteran opted out of his deal with the Royals.

“Mike and [assistant GM] Amiel [Sawdaye] and I got together and we said, ‘Why not Clay?’ ” Lovullo said. “The reports on him were very good and so we said, ‘Let’s do it.’ And he’s been outstanding for us.

“He’s pounding the zone, following the game plan, with a four-pitch mix. It’s been perfect timing for us and a great job by him. Clay is making a statement every time he goes out there. I remember in 2013 and parts of ’14, he was hitting 92-95 miles per hour. But now it’s mostly 90 and 91 and an occasional 92. It’s been very effective.”

Diamondbacks' Clay Buchholz: Goes six innings in rehab start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Buchholz (oblique) covered six innings for High-A Visalia in his rehab start Thursday against Inland Empire. He gave up two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six.

After pitching in a simulated game last weekend, Buchholz was back on the mound in a non-controlled setting Thursday for the first time since suffering the oblique injury in his June 24 start against the Pirates. Buchholz, who tossed 78 pitches in the rehab start, shouldn't require any additional time in the minors and looks poised to come off the 10-day disabled list and settle back in as the fifth man in the Diamondbacks rotation Tuesday against the Cubs. The 33-year-old is expected to assume the spot of Shelby Miller, who won't be cleared to resume a throwing program for at least another week after exiting with elbow inflammation in his final start before the All-Star break.
