It wouldn't be a San Francisco 49ers season without a strange injury situation.
All signs pointed toward optimism about running back Christian McCaffrey, who played in only four games last season because of knee and Achilles injuries. Achilles tendinitis cost McCaffrey the first eight games. Then early in his fourth game he suffered a knee injury after falling awkwardly at the end of a long run.
The 49ers' Wednesday practice report didn't include the veteran running back. Thursday he showed up as a limited participant, and Friday he was not part of the team's session.
Here's everything we know about McCaffrey's injury:
McCaffrey's presence working out on a side field is a good sign. He also told reporters after Friday's session that some cramping was what took him out of Thursday's session early. McCaffrey said he's planning on playing against Seattle.
The 49ers are officially listing McCaffrey as questionable. He may be confident that he's going to suit up, but that won't be the ultimate determination. Given his importance to the 49ers' roster, the team may want to be cautious. However, this is McCaffrey's first injury issue of the season. If it turns out it was only some cramping Thursday, we'd expect McCaffrey will play. If there's more to it and the team is worried about additional injury after treatment Saturday and a workout before Sunday's game, then he won't play.
Shanahan was mum on the extent of McCaffrey's injury in his Friday press conference.
“It's questionable, questionable concern," Shanahan said. "I'm not going to say anything about Christian guys, or any of our players' injuries.”
The head coach did confirm the injury cropped up Thursday and hasn't been something lingering for awhile.
It would be a pretty significant surprise if Brian Robinson isn't the starter against Seattle. Shanahan on Friday said Robinson doesn't know the entire playbook, but he does know the game plan which should be enough to get him through a full workload Sunday. Isaac Guerendo is also an option behind Robinson. Rookie Jordan James is officially doubtful as he returns from a finger issue.
