The Chargers are expected to have an improved offense in 2025, which may lead to more relevant options in fantasy football. It's a difficult Week 1 contest, though, as Justin Herbert and company have to go up against one of the best defenses in the NFL in the Chiefs.
The last few battles have been low scoring, and that doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the Chargers' fantasy options for Week 1.
Let's look at start/sit decisions for the Bolts in fantasy for the upcoming season opener:
Sit: RB Omarion Hampton
The sky is the ceiling for the Chargers' dynamic rookie tailback, but that doesn't make him a must-start in Week 1. It's his first career game, which typically doesn't lead to a heavy dosage of touches.
Fellow running back Najee Harris is expected to suit up in the contest as well and help split carries with Hampton. Most importantly, the Chiefs' defense allowed the second-least fantasy points to opposing running backs in 2024. All of these factors make it hard to trust Hampton in fantasy this week fully.
Start: WR Ladd McConkey
McConkey actually missed the second contest between the two sides in 2024, but he excelled in the one game he did play against Kansas City. In Week 4, McConkey tallied seven catches for 67 yards (career-high at the time) and a touchdown.
With moving parts around the wideout room, McConkey is the one mainstay that Herbert can turn to against a difficult defense in Week 1. That should bode well for his fantasy prospects, and it deems him a must-start to begin the season.
Sit: WR Tre Harris
This should be a no-brainer at the beginning of the year. The rookie second-rounder has talent, but he's buried on the depth chart to begin the 2025 campaign.
He should be rostered as a stash in deeper leagues and is likely a free agent in smaller leagues. If he is on your roster, sit him until he shows legit promise in this suddenly deep wide receiver room in Los Angeles.
Start: K Cameron Dicker
If your league has eliminated kickers, my apologies. While kickers are far from the most important fantasy position, they can still win or lose you a matchup on any given week. Dicker has established himself as one of the best kickers in the NFL, and that translates to fantasy.
The fourth-year Texas product was a top-five kicker in fantasy in 2024, and the offense should be even better this year, which can only help his numbers. In the second game between the Chiefs and Chargers in 2024, Dicker nailed four field goals. Given the fact that this game is in Brazil, it will be interesting to see what the kicking conditions are like, but that's not enough of a worry to bench Dicker.
Sit: Chargers D/ST
The Chargers had the No. 1 scoring defense in 2024 and were a top-10 fantasy defense in turn. With that being said, this is a difficult matchup to begin the season. Any time you face Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' explosive offense, it's pretty much a must-sit for your defense/special teams in fantasy.
