The Los Angeles Chargers have had a rollercoaster of an offseason, but for the time being things are trending upwards.

It began about a week before free agency when general manager Joe Hortiz revealed a bold free agency strategy that would see the Chargers punt on high-profile players for the sake of maintaining their depth and balance.

The need for a pass catcher in Los Angeles was glaringly obvious, but Hortiz frustrated the fanbase once more by expressing his belief in drafting the best player available instead of seeking out a specific position.

He stuck to his word, but luckily Chargers fans loved the pick.

Los Angeles selected North Carolina Tar Heels running back Omarion Hampton in the first round of the draft in a move that exhilarated the fans.

While they would have preferred to snatch one of the premiere wide receivers or tight ends, the Chargers offense just needs playmakers and Hampton is certainly one.

He has a rare blend of speed and physicality for a running back and the potential to develop into an every down back.

He will likely split reps with Najee Harris for his first season at least, but at some point, he will become the bell cow.

The rookie was recently interviewed about his thoughts on playing for head coach Jim Harbaugh and he had this to say, “With him being my head coach, I couldn’t be more happy.”

This isn’t surprising to hear because Harbaugh has made a reputation for himself as a player’s coach.

He does his best to shield his players from criticism and take accountability for his team’s shortcomings which makes players want to run through a wall for him.

This offseason had a chance to devolve into catastrophe for the Chargers, but they seem to have steadied the ship.
