While I understand the reason for the rule that charges a team a timeout when an injury occurs in the last 2 minutes of a game or the half, it makes no sense that a time out should be charged when the clock is already stopped. When the clock is stopped let' s say for an incompletion or a player running out of bounds there is no incentive for a player on any team to fake an injury to stop the clock because the clock is already stopped. Hence the rationale for the rule makes no sense in this scenario.
In yesterday's game had the Cardinals not been forced to take a timeout when Thompson was injured breaking up the Eagles third down pass the Cardinals would have had one timeout left which could have made all the difference in the world since they wouldn't have had to spike the ball on 3rd down to stop the clock. Instead they could have called timeout to run a play on third down,likely a short out. If its complete then you have a first down with about 20 seconds to play and get at least one shot at the end zone, or if incomplete can still try the field goal with the clock stopped.
