I recall reading about a month ago that the most CAP money a team cannot spend is $ 10 million.

I don't know what the penalty is for having more than $ 10 million to spend.

It will be interesting to see what the CARDS do with it. June 1st better produce some nice unexpected releases who want to play for the CARDS or we may end up being the first team to violate this rule.

Even if they spend up to the minimum then that means there is 10 mill left over for other things. The Cards are responsible for over-runs on the stadium. I think they are cutting expenses, (dumping jake, DB, trading down out of the top ten, going with all rookie wrs, signing Emmitt to boost sales) so they will have the cash flow to pay for any over runs with the stadium. Just my opinion. Not saying it is wrong just what I percieve.

I read somewhere that if you do not spend the minimum (lets say the minimum is $67 million) the difference between what you spend and the minimum gets split between the players that are on your roster at the beginning of the season..as an example..if we spend $63 million - 67 - 63 = $4 million would get split between players on the roster..not sure how it is allocated among the players..

I am guess after the rookie pool has been deducted, we will have spent approx. $61 million..

As I understand it they can't spend the money on the stadium. The salaries are paid from our share of the tv contract revenue, the cap is a set % of that payout divided evenly amongst the NFL teams. So in effect if the cap is 70 million, every team is handed 70 million to pay their salaries. But I'm fairly certain they can't just decide to spend 60 on salaries and the other 10 on stadium overruns, the tv money can only be used to pay the players.

Trust me on this, but even with a rookie pool of almost $4M, the cards really will just use barely over $3M to sign their rookies by the time final cuts are done.

By my calulations, that leaves $14M to spend to reach the cap limit. They must spend to at least $10M under (so they have no choice but to spend $4M more).

So we will see at least a few more signings before training camp.

Oh, Russ, just as there is a cap on the max the player payroll can be, there is also a min. The cards can spend just to the min if they wish and pocket the other $10M.

The most under the cap by a non-expansion team has been the Bengals last year at $6M under. A crime that looks to be repeated in Arizona this year.

They should split the remaining 10 million amongst the fans who've backed this team for so long !

You're right though some rookies will replace vets and offset salaries so it will cost less than 4 million to sign them.

Let's see - $10,000,000 divided by let's say 35,000 here plus another 25,000 around the country - so 50,000 true fans equals, drop the four zeros, about $200 smackeroos apiece.

HONEY, I'M GETTING THAT CORDLESS DRILL!!

Shelton is the only one I would extend right now I think. I want to see more from Barrett since I am in the camp that he is barely adequate as a #2 CB. Also, I want to see growth from Wilson and a better understanding of his duties at S...although I may be inclined to extend him now if push comes to shove. KVB, I question extending him unless he proves he is all the back from injury. Also, how does he really fit into long range plans if Johnson steps up etc.

Everything I here about KVB, that he is not only recovered but much stronger than last year and pissed.

He seems to be higly motivated this year, this is from a guy whose base level of motivation is high in the first place.

A round of contract extensions, starting with Shelton and Barrett, appear to be in order.

Adrian Wilson has not proven anything yet except that he is a fabulous athlete who really doesn't know what he's doing on the field sometimes. I think we need to see a year of progress out of him before making a long-term committment.

Question...Didn't we get a new DB coach? Hopefully he can help Wilson develop.

Ed----If someone gets injured during the season and they have to bring in another player, it will also count against the cap---correct? Does that money have to be allocated before the season starts to reach the spending plateau they have to reach, or does it go to the end of the season before they have to reach the spending plateau? If the end of the season is the case, they will have plenty of time to get contract extensions to the various players they want to keep and also will have an opportunity to see how they are performing during the season and who they want to extend.

The minimum is by a certain date (I believe it's the same date everyone else has to be UNDER the cap after cutdowns). So if we're not to the minimum by then we get busted.

I would add ray thompson to my extension list...IMO - we should make reasonable offers to all of the guys I mentioned: wilson, barrett, shelton, KVB and thompson...if they are reasonable.. If they all end up being backups in a year or two..sign them anyway..I assume they all would negotiate a reasonable deal now - and we have the opportunity to upgrade we still can - we have the $$..I would rather sign them now - it gives us more options of not having to fill positions and reach in the future..

Shelton, Thompson and Barrett in that order. I think you're forgetting that KVB and Wilson becomes restricted free-agents NOT UFAs. Shelton and Thompson have proved that they have starting quality and should be extented first. Barrett - Is he a nickel-back or a full time starter? If the coaching staff feels he's good enough to be a starter in the NFL then sign him.
