Cards Burton Named NFL Europe's Defensive Player of the Week

http://www.azcardinals.com/press/pressdetails.php?sid=1205

Running back KEN SIMONTON of the Buffalo Bills, linebacker CHARLES BURTON of the Arizona Cardinals, and Minnesota Vikings punter NICK MURPHY are the NFL Europe League Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the fifth week of the season (May 3-4).

Simonton, who also earned Offensive Player of the Week honors in Week 1, came within three yards of becoming the first player in NFL Europe history to gain 100 yards rushing and receiving in the same game.

The Bills’ running back carried 20 times for 108 yards and caught 8 passes for 97 yards in the Scottish Claymores’ 17-10 loss to the F.C. Barcelona Dragons on Sunday. Simonton added 66 yards on five punt returns to finish the game with 271 all-purpose yards, the second highest total in league history behind Frankfurt Galaxy running back Curtis Alexander’s 279 yards against the Dragons in 2002.

Burton led the Rhein defense, which held the Frankfurt Galaxy scoreless after a late first-quarter touchdown, in the Fire’s 14-7 victory in front of 42,324 fans on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

The Cardinals’ linebacker had three sacks for a net loss of 25 yards and a team-leading 10 tackles in the game. Through the first five weeks of the NFL Europe season, Burton leads the league with 33 tackles.

Murphy punted six times for an average of 45.5 yards in a rainy, low-scoring game at Scotland’s Hampden Park, in which field position and special teams play proved vital. The F.C. Barcelona punter, allocated by the Vikings, helped the Dragons move atop NFL Europe with a 4-1 record.

German national Joerg Heckenbach caught three passes for 57 yards to help the Berlin Thunder record its first win of the season, 34-30 over the Amsterdam Admirals. The National Player of the Week added one tackle on special teams.

That's all We Need

Another linebacker.

I wish him the best of luck though as I have perused his diary on occasion.....sounds like a decent young man....if he can sack the QB maybe there's a place for him here.

Hmm... He sounds like a good guy, and a decent player but he is about as big as me!!! To small for DE, if he is fast he could play SS. Where would we put him ?

Thats bigger then Raynoch Thompson and Fisher before he gained weight this summer!

So it would hardly be a problem if the guys a player!

Question - Here's a guy I know I continually overlook when analyzing the Cardinal LB positions.

And yet he goes out and racks up 3 sacks in an NFL Europe game.

But does he have the remotest chance of making our roster? And if he did, who would he beat out (assuming that Darling, Hayes and Gilbert were to beat out Young and 2 other LB openings were created by the departure of Fredrickson and Rutledge)?

All NFL Europe "stars" are to be regarded as dog meat until they prove otherwise in the real NFL!!!!!!
