Cardinals Charities Hosts Celebrity Golf Classic XIV

Arizona Cardinals Charities, Outback Steakhouse, Alltel, KDUS Radio, and KSLX Radio hosted the 14th annual Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, May 5 at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park.

Tournament participants played golf with Cardinals players and coaches including Head Coach Dave McGinnis, who served as the honorary chairman of the tournament, David Barrett, Jeff Blake, Steve Bush, James Darling, Russell Davis, Levar Fisher, Nathan Hodel, Pete Kendall, Justin Lucas, Josh McCown, Preston Parsons, Emmitt Smith, Jason Starkey, Fred Wakefield, and Kyle Vanden Bosch. Some teams lucked out with players that did have golf experience, but the majority of the players were depending on their groups to help carry them.

“I really don’t know how to play, but I tried to dress nice and make it look like I know how to play,” offered linebacker Levar Fisher. “I am competitor so my group is going to be real creative especially with the pencil (on the score card). I can drive and hopefully some people on my team will be real good at chipping and putting.”

Defensive lineman Russell Davis opted out of playing in last year’s tournament following a lackluster performance at the driving range. This year Davis decided to give the course a full try.

“I’ll be struggling again this year,” admitted Davis. “This is only the second time I’ve played golf so it is going to be real ugly. I am going to use all of the mulligans that I can and just give it my best shot.”

This year’s tournament did feature a few less clubs being broken out on the course although for Vanden Bosch, there were some close calls.

“Usually I am looking for the nearest cart or tree to wrap a club around, but I had to borrow LeVar Wood’s clubs and so I just have to suck it up,” shared the defensive end.

The tournament also featured kicker Tim Duncan, who took a unique approach to golf by teeing off barefoot and with a running approach.

“I am just trying to let the feet breathe a little after being in cleats all weekend,” said Duncan. “I’ll leave out the running approach once I leave the driving range though. I am not always sure where the ball will go when I hit it like that.”

Hall of Famer and Cardinals Vice President Larry Wilson will be retiring at the end of this month, but as one of the more talented golfers in the organization he promised to continue participating in the annual event.

“I think this tournament is definitely something I’ll still be part of,” promised Wilson. “Golfing is one of those things I think I’ll make a return for.”

Proceeds from the tournament are used for the grant program of Cardinals Charities. Established in 1990 to benefit the work of non-profit organizations across Arizona that minister to the needs of women, children, and minorities, Cardinals Charities has distributed grants to over 200 organizations.
