Kyler Murray is apologizing for a social media post that led to concerns about animal cruelty.
In a since-deleted Instagram post, the Arizona Cardinals quarterback shared a photo of himself wearing a throwback Michael Vick jersey while posing with his pit bull.
Vick, the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback, was suspended by the NFL in 2007 and spent more than 500 days in prison for his role in a dogfighting ring.
Social media users called Murray, 28, "tone deaf" for sharing the photo, which he then deleted. The NFL star was asked about the post during media availability on Wednesday, Sept 17.
"In no way, shape or form do I condone animal cruelty or dogfighting or whatever it is," Murray said. "For me personally, y'all saw me wear the Michael Vick jersey, a player I admired very much growing up. … My dogs, Trunks and Swoosh, they both get treated like kings.”

He added, “In no way, shape or form am I condoning that. I saw how it affected people and decided to take it down."
In the deleted image, the Texas native wears a jersey from Vick’s Virginia Tech days. His dog rests at his feet alongside a Goyard bag.
Vick served out his prison term and was reinstated by the NFL, going to play in the league for seven more seasons and three teams.
In December 2024, the 45-year-old was hired as the head coach at Norfolk State University in Virginia.
Murray, a former five-star recruit out of Allen, Texas, committed to Texas A&M University and played one season there before transferring to the University of Oklahoma, where he went on to win the Heisman Trophy.
The seven-year NFL veteran was selected first in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Cardinals.
