Jun. 13—***
Our friends at the College Football Network came up with a new way to measure the success of quarterbacks, what they call QB+.
Using a combination of data and strength of schedule, CFN ranked the Top 25 quarterbacks going into the season. The list includes five Big Ten quarterbacks. Because I am writing about it, you can guess that Luke Altmyer made the cut.
The third-year starter is at No. 15, behind No. 3, Penn State's Drew Allar and No. 14, Indiana's Fernando Mendoza. Altmyer is ahead of No. 20, Nick Iamaleava and No. 24 Athan Kaliakmanis of Rutgers.
About Altmyer, CFN wrote: "After a season where he helped Illinois to its first 10-win season since 2001, the former Ole Miss recruit turned his back on an NFL opportunity and extended his stay in Champaign."
It points out that no quarterback in the Big Ten with more than 150 attempts had a better touchdown to interception ratio.
Altmyer's lack of eye-popping single-game grades was offset by his consistency.
Looking ahead, Altmyer will miss receivers Pat Bryant and Zakhair Faki, but the team has added Hudson Clement from West Virginia, who should put up Bryant-like numbers and contend for all-league honors.
CFN didn't rank the Heisman Trophy favorite, Texas Arch Manning. Though he threw 90 passes in 2024, Quinn Ewers was the starter.
South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers, who Illinois slowed in the Citrus Bowl, deserves to be on the list.
Duke quarterback Darian Mensah is No. 10. Illinois plays the Blue Devils in Durham the second week of the season. Could be a turning point for both teams.
