Calls Mount for Aaron Boone’s Immediate Firing After Yankees’ Stunning Loss to Marlins originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
If you still have any lingering doubts about bad luck in sports, consider the New York Yankees’ improbable loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday night.
The Yankees acquired pitchers David Bednar, Jake Bird, and Camilo Doval ahead of Thursday’s deadline. Additionally, the Yankees added Tampa Bay Rays shortstop José Caballero, a speedy utility player who leads the majors with 35 stolen bases.
So much for them helping the Yankees start August off strong. All three pitchers allowed at least two runs — Bird even gave up a grand slam — in Friday’s stunning 13-12 loss to the Miami Marlins. Caballero committed a ninth-inning error, allowing Miami to tie the game before ex-Yankees catching prospect Agustín Ramírez drove in the game-winning run.
As the Yankees dropped to 60-50 and half a game out of third place, social media set its sight on manager Aaron Boone yet again.
“You can completely swap out the cast of characters and the results remain the same,” an X/Twitter user vented. “Did this not remind anyone [of] game 1 and 5 of the [World Series]? Do they just spend the off day reading their press clippings?”
Added another: “Aaron Boone will never be a good manager. [General manager] Brian Cashman] gave him a Ferrari and he burned out the clutch in less than 40 minutes.”
Several users criticized Boone for using Caballero, an infielder by trade, in right field rather than the newly acquired Austin Slater.
Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay called it the “worst loss of the season.”
“The 1927 Yankees would be a .500 team under Boone,” read one comment.
“Aaron Boone manages like he’s still one of the guys,” another user wrote. “Too loyal, too patient. That’s fine in a clubhouse but not in a dugout.”
Friday marked the Yankees’ first nine-inning loss in a game they scored at least 12 runs since Aug. 12, 1973, vs. the Athletics.
“Aaron Boone, breaking records and making history one day at a time,” an X user quipped.

"All 3 relievers that the Yankees acquired, that were so touted. They all did not do their job tonight...we keep digging new holes, Paul. And this one goes under the worst loss of the year."
