On the Buccaneers' first day back in the building, Calijah Kancey made quite the prediction: If he can stay healthy and play all 17 games, he can lead the league in sacks.
Calijah Kancey has cemented himself as a budding star in the NFL after his first two seasons, amassing 11.5 sacks, 21 tackles for loss, and 29 quarterback hits. There’s only one problem: he’s yet to play a full 17-game season, hindered by a calf injury in both seasons. Calf injuries are tricky as they are soft tissue injuries and are notorious for reinjury. Luckily, there are preventive steps Kancey can take, such as stretching and calisthenics, to help reduce the probability.
As far as leading the league in sacks, it’s a tall task with the likes of Trey Hendrickson (17.5) and Myles Garrett (14) leading the pack. However, the numbers may support Kancey’s claim. 43 QB Hurries to go along with 18 QB hits means Kancey has already made the backfield his home. Adding a proven pass rusher across from Yaya Diaby in Hassan Reddick only opens the door for Kancey, seeing less doubles and less attention. With a full season, the sky’s the limit for “Baby Aaron Donald”.
