In one of the weirdest takes on the Cleveland Browns in recent weeks - and given the drama surrounding everybody from Travis Hunter to Shedeur Sanders and so many in between, that's saying something - we now have a report that suggests that ...
Quarterback Joe Flacco is in some sort of "thin-ice'' trouble?
Wait. What?
Flacco, now 40, has had somewhat of a career resurgence in recent years. And he says he's not even thinking about the "R-word.'' ... which makes a lot of sense around here given the fact that he has a terrific chance of being the Browns starting QB in 2025.
So where's the "thin ice''?
It comes from a USAToday report that uses those words to detail Flacco's status.
But then ...
USAToday's actual report on the situation doesn't reflect that notion at all.
The site writes ...
"Despite winning the league’s Comeback Player of the Year award following the 2023 season, when his inspired play – off his couch – sparked the Browns to a surprise playoff run, no one’s under the impression Flacco is going to win a second Super Bowl MVP. But he certainly is emblematic of what is now perhaps the most fascinating quarterback room in the league ...
"Coach Kevin Stefanski now has to figure out how to divvy up the reps and who to play, though Flacco seems like the early frontrunner.''
All true. ... in 4 major ways ...
1 - Flacco's comeback has been inspired.
2- He's not likely to win a Super Bowl here this year.
3- This QB room - with the trade for 2022 first-rounder Kenny Pickett, plus the arrivals of third-rounder Dillon Gabriel and fifth-rounder Sanders in the draft, plus Deshaun Watson rehabbing that Achilles - is "fascinating.''
4- Flacco might be the "frontrunner'' for the starting job.
So ... where's the thin ice?
After losing his starting job to Lamar Jackson in Baltimore a few years back, Flacco has suited up for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, the Jets again, the Cleveland Browns, the Indianapolis Colts, and now ... the Browns again.
He's seen it all ... and we don't think he sees thin ice ... or retirement.
“I’ve gotten that question — players ask a lot. You know, ‘Why are you still doing this?’” Flacco said in a recent press conference. “And what eventually came to me is, I want to. I want to play. I think it’s easy to. It’d be easy to say, ‘all right, I’ve done enough,’ but I made a decision that I’m going to do this.
"And I feel like once I made that decision, in my mind, then I didn’t give myself an out, and I want to play, and I’m going to play until I can’t.”
"Thin ice'' comes for them all. But the iceman isn't cometh for Flacco just yet.
