Denver Broncos general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton are responsible for building the team's roster and coaching up a successful squad, but it's team owner and CEO Greg Penner who signs the checks.
Penner has the final say for everything at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit, but he empowers Paton and Payton to run the team's football operations. Just like Paton and Payton can replace players, they face the possibility of being replaced if the team does not perform well.
Last year, Paton and Payton used the team's first-round pick on quarterback Bo Nix, who had a brilliant rookie season and helped the team reach the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2015.
“I was incredibly impressed with Bo both on and off the field," Penner said following the team's 2024 season. "It never seemed like any moment was too big for him. We had some big moments this year. He battled throughout games and never saw him give up or let up, even when things were not going our way.
"He’s got all the physical traits that you need to be a great quarterback. Mentally, he is sharp. The players respond to him. His teammates love him. In terms of the offseason, he’s an incredibly hard worker and loves studying tape, being in the gym and that will serve him well this offseason as he builds for the future. I know he will be better next year.”
During his end-of-season press conference in January, Penner was asked about his favorite highlights from Nix's rookie season and if there was a moment when the owner realized the franchise had found "their guy."
“One, I think Sean and his coaching staff did a tremendous job with Bo and supporting him," Penner said. "I think that’s critical for a rookie to know that the organization has your back, because you’re going to have some ups and downs as a rookie. Definitely some highlights. You could see him grow. He took that first step I’d say in Tampa Bay. That was great. We saw him have some comebacks in a few games.
"Going on the road against the Chiefs, I thought that was a step for him. [He] also played well in Cincinnati, a tough environment. Leading the team through that four-game winning streak. There were a number of points along the way. I don’t think there was any one moment where we said, ‘It’s obvious that he’s the guy,’ but it kept building throughout the season. You look at his stats, and he just had a tremendous first season and has all the great leadership qualities that you want in a quarterback.”
After topping 4,200 yards from scrimmage and scoring 34 touchdowns as a rookie, Nix will look to take another step forward in Year 2. With the backing of Penner, Paton and Payton, the young QB is set up for success.
