The San Francisco 49ers dealing with a plethora of injuries to some of their most important players seems to becoming something of an unortunate tradition in recent seasons.
For the last two weeks, the 49ers have been without starting quarterback Brock Purdy after he suffered a turf toe injury in Week 1. On Sunday, backup quarterback Mac Jones said he also re-aggravated a knee injury, which could put the team in dire straits for Week 4.
Or perhaps not. San Francisco may have ended up on Lady Luck's good side for once with Purdy's rapid recovery timeline. The 49ers' starter may be readying to make his return in their Week 4 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Purdy's recovery from his toe ailment – along with an AC joint sprain in his left (non-throwing) shoulder – is progressing better than the team expected. If that rapid progress continues, Purdy would be in line to make his next start against Jacksonville.
Here's all of the latest on Purdy and Jones:
NFL WEEK 3: 32 things we learned include backup QBs, touchdown returns aplenty
Purdy suffered an AC join sprain on his left (non-throwing) shoulder as well as turf toe in the 49ers' Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks. The injuries knocked him out of both of San Francisco's last two games.
The latest reporting from NFL Network indicates that Purdy could be in a position to return to action next Sunday against the Jaguars. He's been recovering from both injuries quickly, reports say.
His ability to practice in a limited capacity all throughout last week, according to the 49ers' official injury report, inspires additional confidence Purdy is nearing a return.
NICK BOSA INJURY UPDATE: 49ers DE ruled out of Week 3 game vs Cardinals with knee issue
Jones, the 49ers' backup quarterback, has led the team to a 2-0 record in his two games filling in for the injured Purdy.
On Sunday, NFL Network reported that Jones had been dealing with a PCL sprain since training camp and that he re-aggravated the injury in the 49ers' Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Fox Sports cameras caught Jones limping after taking a sack, but he remained in the game and led a game-winning drive to close out Sunday's divisional matchup.
It's unclear as of the time of writing whether the injury could cause Jones to miss any time. With Purdy's return on the near horizon, it's possible the 49ers could be avoiding an injury-driven disaster under center.

Jones, the former New England Patriots' first-round pick, was the 49ers' backup quarterback to start the season.
With Purdy's Week 1 injuries, Jones has started each of San Francisco's last two games, and former UFL MVP Adrian Martinez has been his backup.
Purdy, who began his career as the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and 49ers' third-string quarterback, has been San Francisco's Week 1 starter in each of the last three seasons. This past offseason, he signed a five-year, $265 million extension. Week 1 injuries to his toe and non-throwing shoulder have kept Purdy out of his team's last two games.
Jones, a first-round pick by the Patriots in 2021, joined the 49ers this offseason on a two-year deal as the team attempted to upgrade their backup quarterback position. He's led the team to a 2-0 record in relief of the injured Purdy, but he re-aggravated a PCL injury in Week 3's win over the Cardinals.
Martinez signed with San Francisco's practice squad in August after the New York Jets waived him following training camp. The 2024 UFL MVP has served as Jones' backup in each of the last two weeks.
