I am thinking we need to keep him one more season, or at minimum half of this season to make it possible. The problem is, his salary is what's really keeping us from a rebuild. I'd almost give up the tenth pick in the draft to any team that would take him right now!

There is no good solution to the Beal problem, but buying him out and stretching him is the worst possible scenario. Buy him out- fine, but no stretching. Being screwed for two years sucks, but it's better than being screwed got five years.

I totally agree with you. Dave Burns, of Burns and Gambo, I remember his words when the deal was announced for Beal. He said, "The Suns are going to live with this contract because no one is taking that from the Suns." So far he's been right.

I don't know the answer for sure, but if the Suns buy out Beal, don't they have to stretch his buyout salary (amount) per the CBA?

Edit: In other words, it's a cap hold.

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it. Teams waive players all the time. The only difference is that his contract is gigantic.

I don't think the Suns can write off Beal's salary in one swoop in a buyout because otherwise, I think the Suns would do it in a millisecond. A big problem is he has 2 years left on his contract (for huge amounts), unlike many other buyouts.

They don't have to stretch it, but it would count over the two years he had left. For sake of argument he is owed 110 million roughly. if we bought him out at that number $55 million would count against our cap for each of the two years remaining on the contract. Just we don't have Beal anymore, and it doesn't really buy cap relief for us. Thus Beal would have to take less for it to be worthwhile to pursue the buyout. The stretching just makes the cap hit smaller for more seasons.

That's like waiving Beal.

He gets paid for two years of full salary by the Suns and gets paid by another team. They might as well keep him.

For the first time I actually believe they’re going to stretch him... $20m a year thru 2030 to save over $200m in tax bills on a guard heavy team.

Got 'preciate Beal's commitment to the Suns, it is unwavering.

I know in this context, it is a joke, but a lot of suns fans online have been trashing Beal with this idea that he is rejecting trades that would help us.

There are no Beal trades, he has not rejected anything because we cannot find anyone willing to take his contract.

Totally agree with you. Why would anyone take on his contract plus have a player that is injured most to the time???

Well yeah, that remains on the salary sheet and counts against the cap. If they wanted him to not be with the team, they could just waive him. It doesn't help with the salary cap.

Yes, but it cripples them cap-wise for five years instead of two. They can be screwed for two years or five years.

This year is going to suck. I believe that's unavoidable. There's a glimmer of hope we can move Beal as an expiring deal next off-season but I'm not counting on that. Until Beal expires we need to focus on weathering the storm. I am 1000% in agreement that stretching Beal would be the worst mistake we can make now, even worse than dealing the #10 pick to move him.

This year should be all about developing Dunn, the #10, and other picks.

Completely agree. Before the last CBA, I'd disagree that Beal's expiring contract would be a potential asset, but the new CBA is really brutal, so it's possible that a huge expiring contract has some value.

Actually we can’t stretch Beal until the 26-27’ season because player’s stretch cap hits each year can’t take up more than 15% of the cap combined.

Can't imagine who those teams could be, but hope it's true.

I'm hearing it as well, bouncing around the internet. Hope there is something to it.

We should brace ourselves for one of our first-round picks being used to off-load Beal.

If the Suns should do that, I hope they trade down first and/or get second round picks in return.

I saw someone in their mock draft suggest the Suns trade Beal, 10 and 29 to BKN for Cam Johnson, 19 and 27. I could get behind that.

The same here. I've seen versions where Claxton was included.
