Former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason spoke Monday on "Boomer and Gio" on WFAN about Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders' slide to Day 3 of the 2025 NFL draft, when the Cleveland Browns selected him in the fifth round with the 144th pick.
"(NFL teams) took him off (their draft boards), and they took him off because the owner said 'take him off,'" Esiason said. "'I don't want that guy.' Shedeur Sanders just torpedoed himself. His attitude off the field at the combine, and his dad didn't help him either. You know, he was on podcasts talking about this is my son if I can get him to where I want to get him to, I'm gonna do that. But, you know, when you listen to this kid talk right prior or at the combine about if you want a new culture in your locker room, I'm the guy to do that. I can turn it around. I mean, he's very high on himself. And I think he was very off-putting to many, many coaches and general managers in the league. And I'm telling you right now, and I know this after talking to three different personnel people in the NFL this weekend: They didn't even have him on their board. … I don't want this entitled person on our team. And I don't blame them."
ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr., who voiced his displeasure with NFL teams for avoiding Sanders, mentioned several times during ESPN's draft broadcast that Esiason was expected to be selected in the first round in 1984 but fell to the second round, when the Bengals took him 38th overall. Kiper Jr. was, in Esiason's words, "going ballistic" that he was still available in the latter stages of the first round.
From 1984 to 1992, Esiason threw for 25,671 yards and 174 touchdowns while completing 56.2 percent of his passes for the Bengals. He came back to Cincinnati in 1997 and helped the Bengals to four wins in five games.
