Realized last night that my Spotify subscription includes recorded books.
I have never tried the format before so I selected a Brandon Sanderson title and gave it a shot.

I'm not sure if it's the book or the format...but I find that I can't remember what happened ten minutes ago. It's like this dude is reading random paragraphs. Nothing sticks.

This has happened to me before when reading books that I find to be dull....but I heard Sanderson is a top notch fantasy writer...

Considering maybe trying Fellowship of the Ring...maybe something I already know that I like will give me a better experience??

Because right now this is looking like a real ******** way to read a book and a waste of time.

The narrator can make or break an audio book. You can have a terrible story with a great narrator and it's amazing. You can have an out of the world story with a terrible narrator and it's unbearable.

If you can do a sample listen then I recommend that before committing to a book.

I found something I like.
It's called a "Dramatized version" instead of a narrator it has a full cast...music, background noises...
It's pretty cool. Makes the book much more interesting...it draws you in.

Found a negative... big one.
Spotify only comes with 10 hours a month of audible books.
The book I'm reading estimates itself at 40 hours read time...Spotify charges $12.99 for 10 additional hours....
Which basically means it would cost me $39 additional on top of my free 10 hours just to complete this one book.

That is pricing that's just light years beyond freaking rediculous

I'm back to just reading them myself...vision issues be damned

It takes a while, but it gets easier. It’s like a muscle; the more you use that portion of your brain the stronger it gets.

Start with something you’re VERY interested in learning. That will help for sure.

The Phx library has a pretty much unlimited selection. I’d guess your local library does as well.

I found a happy medium...a decent TTS app...it is not as engrossing as the dramatized version...but amazingly, the computer voice is actually a better reader than the narrators in my first attempt.
just have to get adjusted to a few simple errors...for example, the main characters name is Violet...her friends call he Vi...the computer pronounces it "Vee" instead of "Vy"....same issue with several names...but after a few chapters my brain auto adjusts when I hear it.

But, the fact that this reading app can keep me interested in this book has me pretty convinced that the book itself was dull in my first attempt.
after I finish this trilogy I may go back to that first one and see how it does under the influence of the TTS app

The single greatest audio book ever

It’s hilarious and Norm plays it completely straight while reading it.
