The Denver Broncos exceeded outside expectations in 2024, winning 10 games and reaching the NFL playoffs with a rookie quarterback under center.

Last season marked a huge step forward for the franchise, but it became apparent that the club still has a mountain to climb to become a true contender in the AFC.

The Broncos were humiliated in a 41-10 road loss to the Baltimore Ravens, they squandered an opportunity to beat the Kansas City Chiefs on the road, they lost road games to the Los Angeles Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals, and they were sent packing in the first round of the playoffs with a 31-7 road loss to the Buffalo Bills.

After showing improvement last fall, Denver now has to take the next step and beat the conference's contenders.

“We definitely have to score more than seven points in [those] tough games," Nix said after the 2024 season. "We went to Baltimore and only scored 10, scored seven [in the playoffs]. [We] have to finish at Kansas City. So there are certain things where it all comes down to execution and scoring more points. Our defense played well in all the games. We just have to somehow find ways to score, and keep momentum and keep it on our side.

"It’s also tough, eventually you go on the road and all three games I just named were all on the road. So we have to go and get key road victories. So that’s what it’s going to take in the future, but like I said, it’s easier said than done. Only one team a year does it, so that’s what we’re working towards.”

After reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2015 last season, the Broncos have a goal of winning the AFC West in 2025. Road victories against the Chiefs and Chargers would go a long way toward accomplishing that goal. And once Denver reaches the postseason, if they go far enough, they'll likely end up with another game in Baltimore or Buffalo. They failed both those tests in 2024. We'll see if they can turn the corner in 2025.
