You raise excellent points. I think for some of us it’s more of trying to keep at least one side of the political spectrum on the high road and when a dem’s blackface past comes up it weakens the surface argument that the left has against racism on the right. I know they’re nowhere near the equivalent but note I used the phrase “surface argument” purposefully because unfortunately I believe that’s where the majority of public opinion resides. So all those voters that aren’t fully right or left leaning see a dem in blackface and think “oh both groups are racist equally, we cross that off as being a negative owned by the right.”

I once had a coworker get offended when they saw a pokemon costume in our Philippian call center that had a black face.

The pokemon has a black face.

    its a pokemon.

I dated a black girl my freshman college year. We went to a 70's-themed party. She encouraged that I dressed up with a huge afro, big boom box, funky clothes, and paint my face and arms black so we could be a disco couple. So I did. The party was about half white people, half black. Looking back, yes that was a mistake in today's society, but all the people at the party, guys and girls, black and white, thought it was hilarious. The people at the party were close friends and knew I didn't have a racially mean bone in my body. Some of the black guys were on the football team and even joked about that since I looked more black, maybe my 40 time would improve.

Thank god no pictures were taken that I know of. Today if someone saw a picture from that night I'd be labelled a racist, even though I dated that black girl for a year, and my Jewish fiancee has bi-racial kids.

But I would never even think about wearing a KKK hood. And I wouldn't think of doing black face now.

To be fair, this was straight parody and was advertised as such.

So blackface is ok if it's a parody. Copy that.

Hmm, did I say that? Wondering why a lawyer of all people would outright accuse me of that.

I never said one way or the other. Didn’t make it ok for you to outright accuse me of racism.

Right or wrong, Tropic Thunder was not an attempt to overtly be racist. We can argue whether it was effective or not underneath the raunchy humor.

I didn't accuse you of racism. I merely sought clarification of your position. Nowhere in my posts, Chaplin, will you see me accuse you of racism - you implied that.

Regardless, so blackface is ok if it's not an attempt to be overtly racist?

Just curious.... Is it ok for Eddie Murphy to do this?

This is what you said. In no post did I say blackface is ok. YOU implied that I did.

It depends on the context. Was it ok for Robert Downey Jr. to be in blackface? Of course it wasn’t, that was one of the points of the movie. They have multiple jokes about it—a lot of them involving the actual African-American cast member.

Like I said, we can argue all day whether it’s wrong or not, but there is a huge difference between this and what we’ve been talking about.
