With quarterback Joe Burrow out for most of the remainder of the season after it was determined he needs surgery on his torn ligaments with his turf toe, the Cincinnati Bengals are in the market for a free-agent quarterback.
Jake Browning will take over as the starting quarterback for now, but the team has been calling around, looking for options as a backup. The only other quarterback on the roster is Brett Rypien, who is on the practice squad.
For one reason or another, recently retired quarterback Derek Carr's name came up, mainly thanks to Mike Florio of NBC Sports. And he wasn't even named as an option for the role. Florio simply noted that Carr wouldn't be a fit for the Bengals because he is clearly still dealing with the shoulder injury that caused him to retire in the first place.

In addition, even if the Bengals wanted to try and lure Carr out of retirement, they'd have to work out a trade with the New Orleans Saints, as Carr is technically still under contract with the team, having retired while still under his current deal. Therefore, the Saints still own his rights. Think back to when the Buccaneers acquired tight end Rob Gronkowski. When he initially retired, he was still under contract with the New England Patriots. So, the Buccaneers had to swing a deal with the Patriots, sending a fourth-round pick to New England for Gronkowski and a seventh-round pick.
In any event, Florio just wanted to make it clear that Carr, who nearly beat the Bengals in the Wild Card Round before the Bengals reached Super Bowl LVI, is extremely unlikely to suit up for Cincinnati anytime soon.
