The Cincinnati Bengals approach training camp with Trey Hendrickson a big question mark.

Hendrickson has been spotted in the Cincinnati area recently, yet remains in a very public contract standoff with the team over his desire for an extension.

From an outsider’s perspective, it seems clear enough that Hendrickson wants a long-term commitment at a fair value, while the Bengals want to play the shorter game with a 30-year-old defender.

Another Hendrickson contract projection has rolled in, this time with Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport predicting a three-year extension worth $103.5 million: “If the Bengals have legitimate aspirations of a deep playoff run, they need to figure out a way to get a deal done with Hendrickson. But with each passing week, that appears less likely.”

That’s a huge number for Hendrickson, though it stands to reason the Bengals might be willing to get in that zip code if the structure is to their liking.

Interestingly, though, one could argue the Bengals and Hendrickson are likelier to do an extension once camp starts and into the preseason. As the regular season approaches, we near serious game fines and the uglier side of a standoff that both parties surely want to avoid, especially as Hendrickson can’t necessarily afford to skip the bulk of a season.

Regardless, the Bengals and Hendrickson are talking again, which is a good start.
