The fallout of Cincinnati Bengals star defensive end Trey Hendrickson unexpectedly showing up and giving a lengthy interview about his contract standoff with the team continues.

Beyond the obvious, another angle that's worth exploring is what happens if Hendrickson makes good on his threat to sit out.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk highlighted Haason Reddick as a cautionary tale for Hendrickson while talking about his options, albeit with some unnecessary Mike Brown-related criticism:

"If Hendrickson wants to skip mandatory minicamp and be fined by the team, that’ll be fine with Bengals owner Mike Brown. If Hendrickson wants to give up $50,000 per day to hold out of training camp, Brown will gladly accept the gift.

And if Hendrickson hopes to sacrifice $888,888 per game to stay away into the regular season, plenty of angels will be getting their wings as the Cincinnati cash register rings and rings."

Last year, Reddick missed all of training camp and the first six games of the regular season while holding out for a better contract. Along the way, his agency dropped him and he eventually agreed to a reworked short-term deal, not a long-term pact.

As we've stressed a few times, Hendrickson is stuck. He threatened a holdout last offseason and a report even hinted at the threat of retirement. He's under contract for one more season after signing a short-term extension recently, too.

Now, Hendrickson can charge forward with his holdout, play next year on the $16 million current contract or accept whatever the Bengals have on the table in terms of an extension. Taking the Reddick route is rare and, clearly, not ideal.
