The Chicago Bears locked down a key contributor on defense agreeing to terms with slot cornerback Kyler Gordon on a multi-year contract extension.
Gordon has developed into one of the NFL's best nickel cornerbacks, and he could find even more success under new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. Last season, Gordon had a career-high 75 tackles, including our tackles for loss, four pass breakups, 0.5 sack, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and two QB hits in 15 games.
While Gordon was "indifferent" to the timing of a potential extension, he did express a desire to remain with the Bears for the long-term.
"I mean, I love Chicago," Gordon said on March 12. "I love everything about it -- the people, the history, the team, the community -- so if this is where God tells me to be, this is where I will be, this is where I want to be."
Gordon was the first draft pick by general manager Ryan Poles and is now the first player he's drafted to be signed to a contract extension.
Here's everything to know about Gordon's extension:
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Bears are signing Gordon to a three-year, $40 million contract extension that includes $31.25 million guaranteed. That makes Gordon the NFL's highest-paid slot cornerback and 21st highest-paid cornerback in the league.
Gordon was entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2025, and his three-year extension now keeps him in Chicago through the 2028 season. Gordon was one of the first players named by new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, an indication that Gordon will be a key contributor in this defense for the foreseeable future.
Cornerback is arguably the deepest position group on defense, and they've now locked down their second-best corner to a long-term deal. Last offseason, the Bears signed Pro Bowler Jaylon Johnson to a four-year, $76 million extension. Now, Chicago has both Johnson and Gordon under contract through the 2028 season. Cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson and Terell Smith, respective third and fifth round picks in the 2023 NFL draft, are under contract through the 2026 season.
There are actually a couple of contenders in Gordon's draft class who could be signed to a contract extension, but it certainly feels like it would come after this season as both have something to prove. Safety Jaquan Brisker, also selected in the second round of the 2023 draft, has been a core member of this defensive secondary. But his biggest concern is staying healthy. Brisker has had a concussion in each of his first three seasons, including missing most of the 2024 season after sustaining a concussion in Week 5. Then there's fifth-round left tackle Braxton Jones, who's been a starter since his rookie season. He's been solid but not necessarily the long-term answer. Chicago could certainly upgrade at the position rather than commit to Jones.
Elsewhere, there are some veterans entering the final year of their contracts who Poles could look to bring back, including linebacker T.J. Edwards, who has been one of Poles' best free-agent additions given the value of his contract and his contributions on defense. Safety Kevin Byard has also been a big veteran leader and stepped up in Brisker's absence last season. New left guard Joe Thuney, who the Bears traded a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Chiefs to acquire, certainly appears in line for an extension given the draft commitment and entering the final year of his deal.
